I recently spent a few quid at the local small town market purchasing a talwar. At least in my limited knowledge I believe it to be a talwar. It's extremely rusty and missing the end of the pommel.
I want to fix it up and maybe do a bit of test cutting, but when it came to straightening out a bend in the blade it bent far too readily/easily. Now, I don't have too much experience with swords I was expecting much more resistance and a bounce back to form. At a guess it felt like iron or mild steel.
So in light of this my question is this a sword or just something made up for tourists. Or is this info to know?
Any advice would be great and if pictures will help I'll try to figure out how to post some.

Upload your photos to a hosting site like imgur and share the album link here. It'll make it a lot easier to figure out what you have.
That said, if it's a legit antique, it may just have a softer temper. I'm not really sure how talwar were generally heat treated, but I know a lot of less-than-amazing "munitions grade" swords were created at one point and are still filtering out into the market.
If your sword is newer, it could just be untempered. Combined with other potential construction methods, this may or may not make it less than optimal for swordly activities.
I have straightened some antique Afghan Khyber knives fairly easily, though, so it might be fine.

Hmm, rather than an Indian talwar, that might actually be a Javanese piso podang. I'm not 100% sure, and hopefully somebody else can chime in and confirm one way or the other.

That's interesting. Gives me some homework to do. I initially thought it was missing the point on the pommel but it looks like it was made that way.

I’ll confirm that that very much looks like a piso podang.
