Hopefully I can make this quick. I think I'd like to get rid of this and replace it with something less crowbarish. I think I paid $100 or $120 for it in Savannah about 10 years ago (before I was hip to "actual" weapons), but so I can be precise in my description, does anyone one recognize this from this pic? I can take better pics of whatever is necessary when I get home, but I thought maybe one of the experts on here would recognize this right off. It's peened, if that helps, and not sharpened (big surprise). Probably one of the big three budget brands (Deepeeka, Universal or Windlass), but not sure which.
What sucks is, even if I sell it, shipping is like half the cost! Probably better to sell it locally?

Perhaps consider giving it away to someone you know that will enjoy it for what it is. Maybe give it to a youth who would enjoy having a sword like object even knowing what it is and is not. It might find great value in the eyes of such a person.
If you feel that the quality is too low even for that, then its right place may well be the local landfill.
Just a thought, with no comment at all intended toward the actual value of your sword.

Just a thought, with no comment at all intended toward the actual value of your sword. I've given away 3 or 4 already of various quality and I think they're underappreciated, even for what they are, which ain't much. Sorta like, "Oh gee, thanks" *add eyeroll*.
It's peened and a solid sword and, price-wise probably comparable to some of the Universal sabres, as well as Deepeeka, so I'm thinking I just need to select something lighter and more balanced. I'd just like a sabre representative in my collection that isn't embarrassing, ya know? Someone has that Cold Steel Polish saber on there right now, so if I could get rid of this maybe it would pay for at least some of the upgrade. But like I said, it's hard to sell a nameless sword anywhere, and it's not like it says "Mattel" on it (though it probably should). If I can't figure it out I'll probably just take an Accusharp to it and just make it a very scary crowbar.

When I was a kid, long long ago, I would have been overjoyed to receive a “real” (i.e., not requiring my imagination) sword. It would have been the king of all the toys in the neighborhood.
I suppose I still sometimes see the world through those youthful eyes. Back then, video games, on-demand tv, mobile communications and the like were all a thing of the future. The world beyond my back yard was a wilderness to be challenged and explored along-side good friends and loyal dogs.
I honestly hadn’t considered the eye roll thing. That would certainly sour my enthusiasm.
Unfortunately, I’m of no help in identifying your saber. Best of luck with your search for info and possible sale.

I suppose it depends on the type of recipient as to the reaction. As a kid, WOW!! If someone gave me such a gift I’d be in hog heaven.

Pretty sure it's the Windlass Confederate Officers sword. I think they changed the etch to be darker in recent manufacturing (mine isn't darkened, but it's the same etching). Scabbard is exact match.

Given its value and your intent, does it really make any difference who made it?

OK, sounds like a plan. It's not an Albion, but plenty of budget swords being sold on the forum sub $200. Not sure it'll appeal to anyone on THIS forum, thoigh

While a legitimate CSA sword is very valuable, don't forget that original Union M1850 foot officer swords can be had for +/- $1k. You might try joining a couple Civil War reenactor pages on FB and try to sell it there...

I actually have a buddy who lives in VA near Fredricksburg and a few other historic battlefields. He'd probably have a better market for it than I do in Florida, plus save shipping charges.

Dear rschuch,
For what it's worth, this probably isn't a Windlass product. Windlass does a tighter wire wrap with more turns on its products' grips, and typically lacquers the brass guards on its ACW sabers so that they don't darken over time.
I hope this proves helpful.
Best,

Dear rschuch,
I'm sure. I only say "probably" because Windlass has been known to sell a lower level of product than the ones that sell through Atlanta Cutlery and Museum Replicas. Conceivably, this could be from that lower level, but I think Windlass stopped doing that more than a decade ago. I think it's more likely this is a Deepeeka. They essentially copied Windlass' sabers, so it's no surprise that the scabbard looks just like a Windlass scabbard. As it happens, I have a Deepeeka M1850 foot officer's sword, and it has the same style of etching with a darkened background as your saber. I haven't seen enough Universal Swords and WeaponEdge examples to be able to judge with confidence whether this one might have been made by one of them, but my sense is that a Universal would look more like a high-line Windlass. As WeaponEdge doesn't seem to have survived, I can't really speak to the possibility that they're the manufacturer. Keep in mind also that there used to be a lot of smaller Indian and Pakistani forges that seem to have been forced out of the market by Windlass, Deepeeka, and Universal, all of which copied Windlass or Deepeeka for their own products. Your saber could be from one of them.
Best,
Mark Millman

It 's probably 20 years old, so who knows? My initial thought was maybe it's a recognizable style....there's a lot of swords you can pinpoint on sight, like the Windlass BattleCry line, the Christus Imperat, the H/T longsword, KoA XIV, etc. among the ones I own. But I guess this falls into the generic realm like so many katanas do. I saw the peen, leather grip and nice scabbard and thought, "Hey! Must be decent quality!" but yeah, it could be anything. I'll take a look at the Deepeeka and see how it compares, but being so old and with changes in production who knows?

If you bought this from a sutler or participant at some sort of show or event, there's no telling how old it is. These things can circulate in the re-enactor community for decades. Track down who had a blued steel drag instead of a brass one, you'll probably have the maker.

That looks like it to me! Wish they had a couple of other views of it, but I think you nailed it. Thanks!
