Want to try a leather and wire wrap.
The wood I've got is kinda thin, but has a double-spiral groove.. I think it'd look and feel great with supple leather and wire wrapped in the spiral grooves.
What type of leather do you guys recommend to easily press into the grooves?

You'll want something thin and a little stretchy, maybe a goat or lamb skin. Do you have a local leather shop?

You'll want something thin and a little stretchy, maybe a goat or lamb skin. Do you have a local leather shop? Yes there is one I forgot about, I could go check out samples. I'm also looking at some options at Montana leather, they have deer, pig suede with color options I like.. It's an "American" saber", would like to have a "natural/local" vibe. I've been up since about 4am reading about different leathers, grades, pliability and durability etc.. Truthfully, I fractured my right wrist boxing a cpl years ago and I can barely wield this sword(after I've applied a 9in back-edge we'll see), so I may or may not sell it when I'm done. So that in mind, I haven't decided how much durability I really need on it. Mostly I just want it soft, pliable enough to fill small grooves and of a material I can tell the locals is a "local species" for the 'Muricans... So I'm looking at deer, lamb/goat and pig. I'd kinda really like to tell people it's deer hide. I can't figure out how to post pictures of this wood, but its got some narrow crevices. Feel like I will need to use a thin cloth or gauze as filler under a thin stretchy leather to get the flutes/grooves and have the grip meat improvement I'm after. I apologize for any rambling. I woke up a lot earlier than I'd have liked.

Lightweight suede leather is a good choice. But as you have a leather shop nearby you can pick and choose. For wire I use picture hanging wire. It comes in copper silver and brass. All good colors for a sword handle. It's easier to work with and looks better if you double it over and twist it. I do that with an eyehook o the bench and my cordless drill. I lock another eyehook into the drill run it through the hook on the bench then twist it onto the eye hook in the drill then I let rip. Perfect braided wire.

Try looking into bookbinding leather. Do a search on Ebay. It comes in small sheets, enough for one book which will be more than enough for a grip but, you won't have to buy a lot extra for one project.
