I finally had time to fix my Deepeeka Vendel sword. The handle was just way too long and it was clumsily put together with loads of glue. I shortened the grip to 9.5cm and gave the blade a "pattern weld" look. The pattern weld turned out pretty good looking.

Very nice. How did you shorten the grip, and how did you do the pattern?

I started by chiseling off the original wooden handle part (which was awfully bad). Then I filed off the expansions in the rivet heads at the upper guard, heated up to 150C to break the glue, slid through the glue with a carpet knife and wedged it apart. After that it was disassembly (the handle has nut attachment), remove loads of glue, shorten the tang, straighten all those guard plates and file the pommel to fit properly. Make a new appropriate length wooden handle piece, rivet the lower guard, file and fit all together, polish the brass, assemble with little glue, peen the tang and rivet the upper guard (which I may have to do again, Deepeka took some shortcuts there which causes fitment issues). I still haven't decided if I should oil the wood or spray laquer over everything.
As for the pattern welded pattern, the secret is some wall paint spread with a brush and tape to limit the exposure. Then some salt water, cotton pad and 12 volts to darken the blade. This photo shows the blade after tape was removed but before I removed the paint. This was a first try and it worked very well.

Thanks, yes I would say it's a keeper - I've wanted one ever since I saw one of the originals in the museum as a kid. I can't get anything as good for the price. While Deepeka's QC leaves a lot to be desired the metal parts and blade are correct ones. Del tin while looking nice at a glance costs over twice as much and the pommel is peened on top, not assembled from pieces like the original ones and the blade is not the best presentation either.
