What are your guys favourite fighting styles and training regime? I don't mean necessarily to practice yourself, but just in general, to watch on tv even, assuming you guys enjoy stuff like boxing, ufc and other fighting sports
I've expressed a few times that I'm a big Tyson fan, but I've also been a big fan of Ernesto hoost, Connar McGregor, Don Frye and many others. I love watching their fights because I find their explosive styles make their fights super memorable
I've also been a big fan of watching anyone bring in something unorthodox and succeed with it, like when people successfully bring kung Fu into kick boxing or MMA and make it work for them, I always find that to be amazing entertainment. I would never try imitate them, as I severely doubt my ability to make it work for me. I like the explosiveness, hence why I enjoy watching it so much
It also fuels my imagination that maybe the older martial arts worked just fine in their inception, and maybe these guys making it work today can give us ideas of what might have been needed to make those older, less used, styles more effective. Maybe you need to be able to jump in the air 6 feet high to have the leg power to make some of those kicks practical and explosive enough, and so on and so forth
Excuse my frequently horrendous spelling. I use a cell phone and I tend to focus more on what I'm trying to say, and how I phrase myself than I am to pay attention to every single word I spell. It's also hard to switch tabs and search the correct spelling of everything I'm unsure of, as sometiems the page reloads and I gotta type it all again and so on. So BEAR 🐻 with me on that

I think UFC has really taken over from professional boxing these last couple decades, particularly the heavy weights, after Tyson self destructed. Using less glove padding, wrestling, kicking, etc..., is just more interesting as well as more of what would happen in a street fight, as well as the many different ways you can make your opponent submit (knockouts by foot & fist, pressure point tap outs, choke outs).

I love ufc, or at least, I used to, but these days I haven't kept up with it due to no longer purchasing cable. I alwyas preferred it's early incarnation to its later forms, due to all the variety there was in fighters, and being able to see them go toe to toe with each other. I've been a big fan of seeing shorts from ONE Championships YouTube channel, and before that, I used to watch K1 a lot more

Royce Gracie usually won those, but they had huge sumo type dudes against little Kung Fu or Judo masters, and they had less rules as well, kind of Thunder Dome "two men enter, one man leaves".

Yea it was nuts watching them, like these tough bar fight type guys fighting actual martial artists, it was great. It was neat to see what trained fighters can do against street fighters

The UFC has certainly gained a great deal of popularity since the early 2000's, but Boxing is still huge. I'd argue that the HW division in Boxing has been significantly more interesting than MMA as of late. The HW division in MMA has been pretty weak as of late while Boxing has had guys like Tyson Fury putting on an amazing show. In fact, the UFC Champ Francis Nigannou relinquished his title and is trying to work a fight with Tyson Fury right now in Boxing.
Personally I like all combat sports and have been doing Kickboxing and Muay Thai for the last 15 years. My favorite sport is Kickboxing and it's what motivated me to get into a gym from watching K-1 WGP/K-1 MAX.
I'm really liking the promotion ONE Championship right now. They basically have a variety of rule-sets on every event - MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Submission Wrestling.
Here is their youtube channel, they put up all their fights here:

Awesome, I'm not alone! I agree about boxing, it's been much more interesting for me as well lately. Tyson fury has had some crazy fights, that guy is a machine I've done a little bit muay Thai, but I always wanted to find myself a traditional school after watching my dojo compete against them. They were wicked powerful

They were wicked powerful My trainers came from the Fairtex gym in San Francisco when Alex Gong, Jongsanan, and Bunkerd were teaching there so I got a good bit of Muay Thai in me, plus I've done deep dives into the sport over the last few decades. I'm also a big fan of Dutch Kickboxing and was lucky to get some training from Ramon Dekkers and Andy Souwer.

I am gonna have to admit my own personal bias, I also love watching other people use the styles I have learned in MMA. Since I have done a lot of Karate in my life, I love watching people use it in MMA and am kind of proud its been working its way up to being considered a legitimate and practical style
I always tell people that I did kick boxing and sambo though, because not everyone takes karate entirely seriously yet, but kick boxing is given a little bit more credit, despite that muay thai basically cleaned out kick boxing and its reputation as a popular choice for striking

Dutch Kickboxing stemmed from that combined with more Karate and Muay Thai again. American Kickboxing is Karate based, above waste stuff more flashy. That particular style has essentially died out, but Japanese and Dutch Kickboxing are still very strong. I wouldn't say Muay Thai has cleaned either out, despite Thais having success even under Kickboxing rule sets. As you move up in weight you are pretty much left with nothing but Dutch Kickboxing. Japanese Kickboxing has been flourishing in the lower weight classes since the collapse of FEG K-1. We have an amazing match-up between the two standouts Tenshin and Takeru coming up soon in a RISE vs K-1 event.

I enjoy watching Sumo and Judo. MMA sometimes. I haven't been in a Dojo in a while because public health reasons but I enjoy Aikido and Judo (particularly when free to integrate them, as most Aikido schools teach a tradition more than a survival tool).
If I can get back out there, I'd like to add Krav Maga, just to know what our LEOs are being exposed to these days

Man, I always wished I had Kyokushin available to me where I lived, but we had Shotakan. We did sparring, and if we wanted, full contact sparring, which is something I was training for when I used to go. For fighting events in stuff we had in town. I never quite did make it in the arena but I did some tournament stuff. Anyway, imma look into Dutch and Japanese kick boxing. I been enjoying finding these obscure European styles of fighting, even sambo wasn't too known when I first started it, but it's been some of the most useful stuff I've learned, even if I didn't stick with it. Thanks for sharing those I never knew about them, but I only ever watch 20 minute max videos on YouTube, and a lot of times not even that long lol

I had a friend who grew up doing judo, and he was a formidable guy because of it. Seemed like it enabled him to protect himself really well, along with his boxing training he did at home. Truth be told, I been meaning to get more into actual tactical sort of combat systems, even just as a hobby. I've never found krav maga anywhere I live tho. You guys may notice a theme. So much I wish to do, so little available here

Nobody else prefers nude Jello wrestling? Only if it's of the variety we Canadians refer to as "pudding". The clear stuff simply won't do

So much I wish to do, so little available here I was aware of Krav Maga when it first started growing State-side, but it is now what my State Police (and many other smaller departments) are trained in to use on civilians. I have opinions about that, but point being it is an effective system more accessible here because of that.
