Hello all, I was wondering is anybody has heard of a firm of cutlers or clothiers called Lindley I think they were in London. I've done a bit of a look around and been through Swords and sword makers of England and Scotland and can't see their name. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Cam

OldSwords.com and Withers' British MilitarySwords show no cutler or outfitter by that name. There is a Linney, though. If that is not the right name, try searching www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ for Lindley and other key words such as military, outfitter, swords, etc. That may get you a result. (How about some picks of whatever sword you are researching?)

Hiya Jonathan, I will post a few when I get home. It is a 1845 pattern Officers Sword marked Lindley of London. I forgot to mention that I searched oldswords as well with no luck. Personally I thought maybe they were clothiers that did a bit of sword selling on the side. I will let you know what I find out. Kind Regards Cam

Cam, In that case I recommend searching the London Gazette archives for the Lindley. I have a sword retailed by a firm in Edinburgh, and they do not appear in any of the print sources on makers. They were, however, listed in the Edinburgh Gazette archives. If you have pics, including the proof disc, I may be able to help figure out a date of manufacture. At this point I would guess that Lindley were retailers and not manufacturers.
