Hello, I hope you don't mind me asking a question here. I have no knowledge of swords and need help in identifying a sword which belonged to my late father. I don't know whether to try to sell or take it to the recycling centre. Thanks for your time. Claire The sword is 28" in length. There are numbers/letters on each side of the handle.

Welcome to the forum.
You have a bayonet. The ring in the guard fits over the muzzle, and the pin in the back is part of the lock-to-the-rifle mechanism.
I’m not a bayonet guy, so I’m afraid I can’t be more specific. There are a few folks around here that might know and chime in.
If no one here can ID your item, perhaps a bayonet forum can be of more service.

That looks like a fine 19th C bayonet. I'm thinking it could be a French Model 1874

I saw this thread earlier but there were no pictures at the time. That's a Gras bayonet, as already mentioned. I have one, myself, but in far worse shape. Bayonets like this one fill a very interesting little niche between knife and sword, and turn a club that used to be a gun into a spear.
