Well it is finally spring in Canada and I was able to break out the blades in the backyard for a bit and thanks to the snow up here this was my first time using the new Balaur arms arming sword. I would like to say that I have 3 Balaur's now including this one and the others cut well so I had similar expectations for this one.
Length: Just under 38" so a tiny bit shorter than listed
Blade Length: 32"
Grip: Exactly 4"
Weight: Do not have anything to check but listed at 2lbs 2oz it does feel about that when compared to my other blades. Very light.
The fit and finish is really good even compared to my other Balaurs and the peen is the best of anything I own. The hollow grind is really nice and the center ridge is straight the whole way. The leather feels comfortable and the stitching has no errors at all. To me it felt like whoever put this particular piece together really cared about their work and knew exactly what they were doing.
The going price now is 255$, already up from the first run where I believe it was 220$. Thanks to the steel coupons a lot of us got this thing was incredibly cheap in price as well and due to that i would call it the best for its price I have owned by far.
When it come to cutting this thing is fast and so easy to control, pretty much exactly what I want out of a one hander. Edge alignment was easy and while i do have HEMA experience it was a long time ago and this being the first cutting after a winter off I expected worse results due to user error. It was able to cut water bottles well just like shown in Alientudes video review and I took it a step further hitting some pork ribs. This things heat treat and blade strength are top tier and a 40% strength swing was able to go into 2cm of bone without any issue at a clean 45 degree angle. No chips, no marks just results!
If I did not already own this blade would I recommend it for the new price still? Yes absolutely.
Special thanks to Alientude for posting reviews all the time because it was his video that pushed me that final 1% into getting this beauty!
