I have done some extensive test cutting and thrusting on pork ribs with this gorgeous yet imposing and intimidatingly bowie knife designed by Brother Nathaniel, a.k.a. Levin Lance, and hand forged by Purna Darnal of Great Gurkha Khukuri.
It is a massive bowie with a 13.5" (34 cm) blade of 5160 high carbon spring steel, and 19.5" (half a meter) overall length. The blade has a narrowed ricasso area with a notch typically found on Nepalese khukuri but featuring the cross from the Lodge's sigil. Immediately above the ricasso, the blade starts at a whopping 4.91mm wide, and 7.5mm thick!! Already we are in the late medieval longsword territory. The profile tapers upward to 51.1mm at the clip point--exactly halfway across the blade length, the thickness is tapered down to 5.8mm. It then takes on a false edge all the way to the tip, and the thickness is gradually tapered down to 2.8mm before the final transition to the tip.
Overall it weighs 797 grams or 1 pound and 12.1 oz. Hefty, but perfect for its size. Behind the C-guard with its upswept quillons providing ample hand protection, it features a curved grip made of polished buffalo horn with hand carved pattern of rose vine--a nod to the Lodge's sigil, and ends with a steel cap and the hidden tang goes through a spherical steel pommel and peened. The long and curved grip encourages a pistol grip, and since the point of balance is at 1.5" from the guard, holding onto the grip away from the guard, leaving an inch or two space, is just for cut and thrust. You have incredible balance for point manipulation, and cutting feels authoritative! The reach is also extended further to about 15" or so.
The blade is made of 5160 spring steel with a mirror polish. It features a shoulder with some concave grind 2 cm below the spine, and from the shoulder to the edge it's a flat ground with an apple seed geometry resulting a robust edge without any secondary bevel. The tip is of a pointed arch shape and is therefore stout and durable. It shears through multiple ribs like butter. There is zero hand shock, or edge deformation. The tip is also quite durable--being able to pry wood without bending.
This imposing bowie is available for $225, if you would like to have your own made. You can contact Brother Nathaniel on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/NateSil) to discuss the commission, even make modifications upon this design, or even full blown custom designs.
