Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

A friend of mine has access to a forge and can weld and is exploring sword designs. He wants to make me something to practice on. He said he had an 1/8" piece of steel so I thought a short sword would be best. So I designed this in Illustrator. 22" blade, 28.5" overall. I made a flat area that extends into the waisted area to help make the weakest area more solid, then added a fuller into the wide area to help offset the weight that creates. I like the more symmetrical guard, but thought a curvy handguard kinda matches the leaf blade as well. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated and I'll relay back to him. The Devil's Edge was the primary inspiration, but I wanted to create something that could be used for thrusting as well and so this has a longer point. Attachments:

I think symmetrical guard is probably a must for a double-edged sword. I don't know anything about forging but I'd guess it would be a challenging beginner's project.

I actually really like the asymmetrical guard. Cool idea. I like it, too, but problematic if you want to change leading edges.

I don't think he'll forge it from scratch. He said he has a length of steel that 1/8" thick (don't know how wide or long) that he would use my template to grind into shape and put a handle on. He recently did a knife and wanted to do another project and make something for me. His last response was he was looking for some thicker piece of steel. I'm not expecting miracles or correct distal taper or anything, but if he gets close, I think it might look pretty cool!

Apparently there is some precedence for "my" design! No dimensions given, but it seems I'm only about 2000 years too late to copyright my pattern! Attachments:

Kinda reminds me of the Rankin Bass Hobbit sting.
