Title says it all…
Thinking of sanding down the handle on a recently acquired Cold Steel grosse messer ever so lightly, and then putting a more vibrant tone and finish on it OR taking the wood off and replacing it.
For the refinishing idea…
I’m not 100% sure what kind of wood they use. I know the MAA ones use rosewood, but this is a standard model. I couldn’t identify rosewood anyway. It’s not ugly, it’s just underwhelming. Probably try to do a bold red finish, and put some sheen on it. I guess Rosewood has its own riddle for refinishing, so that should be fun. Any experience refinishing these grips?
As for the replacing idea… has anyone replaced the handles on CS grosse messer before? Know of a video or link? I have some African blackwood and some birds eye maple strips so I could probably do a layup of some kind. Not sure how to rivet it back in place?
Any experience with messer handle refinishing or replacement, do let me know…

there are a lot of different varieties of rosewood (African Blackwood is in the rosewood family).
