I am looking for a good cut and thrust sidesword, and I particularly like the earlier hilts. I keep seeing this one at Kingdom of Arms. kingdomofarms.com/collections/the-bruce-brookhart-line-from-kingdom-of-arms/products/sidesword-cut-and-thrust-bruce-brookhart-line-by-koaso....can someone give me thoughts. My first thought is that it is ugly and looks ahistorical. I am immediately thrown off by the ricasso, and then the pommel looks....odd. So - what I am asking is, does anyone have any historical precedent for this kind of piece? It looks like a bad 90's fantasy sword to me, but I could be wrong, and I want to be wrong, because there are not many swords like this on the market. Anybody seen one of these? Now, the other issue is the price, at $738.00 I am approaching Albion or Arms and Armour territory (i.e., I would have to tell my wife I spent that much money....). Thoughts?

If you need something fit for practicing dueling moves, and would be happy with a 32 to 35 inch blade, for that kind of money, you can get a 19th. Century British or German made military sword, with no trouble at all. If you do that, you'll have something good-looking, with superb balance, excellent steel, history attached, and resale value. You're already in the right subforum to get some good ideas......

Ohh agreed, I have several 18th and 19th century small swords and sabers. I was looking for something to practice cutting with. Specifically bolognese style.
Mostly I was just confused by this sword…. I don’t think I would seriously contemplate buying it. But I wanted to see if I was missing something.

I'm no expert in this area, but I seem to remember illustrations of some similar-appearing swords in articles about the evolution of the rapier. OTOH, the first things that I noticed about it were the extreme minimalism of the design contrasted with the hefty price, which IMHO, do not seem well balanced, even if the sword might be...........

There is no doubt that these swords existed, I am mostly asking about the pommel and the ricasso, as well as the fuller termination.

I think I would save a bit longer and get an Albion side sword. I have a Doge, and it's one of my favorite blades. It feels like the epitome of a transition between arming sword and early rapier (the point control and blade presence shift significantly depending on the grip one uses with that sword). The Doge is also very visually striking, and has one of the most murderous pommels I've ever personally experienced.

I think we generally want to be nice and encouraging to sword manufacturers and sellers in this community but these few lines perfectly summarize the aesthetic of KoA line. Most of them to me look like poorly or at least questionably designed fantasy like swords from the 80s and 90s which try to imitate the real historical pieces. Priced close to Albions while looking Deepeka level in construction and parts quality. But maybe this is what a lot of people (in Ren Faires?) want? Maybe that is what they see or want to see as a sword? I was also perplexed when I saw the line for the first time some time ago. But I'm not a businessman in any way. I can definitely recommend one of the type XIX Albions - Doge or Machiavelli might be right up your alley. Definitely worth saving for. Keep in mind that some owners of these state that these blades are not as stiff as they seem and are better suited for cutting rather than thrusting.

Agreed with encouraging makers and vendors, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going crazy. Brookhart stuff isn’t my cup of tea, but if other people it, good on them! I will likely keep looking at Albions.

Try “Prussian” rather than “German.”

Just keep in mind that Albion and A&A don’t include scabbards With their swords. A&A sells a leather sheath for about $200. So remember to factor that into consideration when price comparing.
