So I decided I wanted another tanto so I cut down a katana and turned it into a tanto. The inspiration for this blade is an antique I saw online with an extremely tapered satsuma-age kissaki. For those of you who don't know satsuma-age was how broken blade were often brought back into usable condition while maintaining a hardened point. I wanted this in tanto form though so first thing I did was cut down a katana blade to 12" and reshaped the point. I decided while I wanted the long tapering point to make it basically an anti-armor blade I didn't want such a fragile point so I went with a 4" kissaki instead of the longer kissaki in the picture. After that I removed the acid etched hamon and gave the blade a satin polish. I want the overall feel of this to be a more simple blade used during times of war. After that I shortened the tsuka down to 5", gave the mekugi hole a better taper, made a brass mekugi and wrapped the tsuka in red cotton in the mitsubitama maki style. I generally prefer a thicker tsuka so I wanted to try this style out and I like it. Other thsn liking the feel I think the style goes well with the more utilitarian look I was going for. The saya still need some work but when I have that finished I'll be posting complete photos. But to give you an idea of what the saya looks like i had to shorten the saya, make a new kojiri, fill in the old kurigata slot and I still have to make a new kurigata slot and such.

Cool. Been thinking of cutting one of my 1045 katanas down to o tanto sizing, but I'm getting lazy in my old age. Was thinking a 22" overall, guardless, 7mm thick, cutting/stabbed would be very handy to have around.

I've done this to 3 of my own blades. I have 1 similar to what you described and I love it, it's a really nice compromise between a katana and wakizashi that can still be used well with 1 hand but doesn't sacrifice reach much. It's especially awesome for indoors. When I get the other one closer to being finished I'll post a picture of it. On that 1 I shortened the tsuka a bit as well to where it's still long enough to get 2 hands on but not too long for an average wakizashi (I'd have to double check it but pretty sure the tsuka is 9.5").
