I got my Cheness 1045 iaito yesterday. I was very skeptical about spending $200 on a clearly "all-china everything" iaito. I looked at a few reviews here and around the web,and judged from their pictures to reach a verdict. I committed to the purchase.
Upon inspection i was a bit conflicted. Surprisingly the swords construction and geometry is great for the price. Trivially, what surprised me the most was how good the handle felt, the ito, the shape, length its probably the best feeling handle, and i do own a Dragon King "Savior" and a Hanwei "Bamboo Mat". HOWEVER...
Cheness' pictures show a suguha hamon on their site for their 1045 iaito. This i was excited about as ive never owned a suguha hamon blade. Elegant, simple, underappreciated. Guess what *I* didnt get. My suguha hamon iaito. Instead, i got a very uneven (with relation to edge distance) notare (ish?) hamon. This upset me... a LOT.
I am taking to this forum for feedback on wirebrushing with the use of a Dremel and wirebrush tip on this 1045 steel blade. What if i make a stencil for a suguha hamon based on the blades shape (using the actual blade, disassembled as reference) would that be a crap idea or would it work. What about rust? What about using WD 40 during the brushing process as its not a stainless steel blade? What material would yall use to make the stencil? Would a plastic window blind blade work? Veneer sheet? Any input would be great. What would yall do ifvin my shoes.

It seems most of the Longquan guys make them with grinders, so a rotary tool is certainly in the neighborhood. I'd be worried about being able to be consistent, and about stray marks, but I'm nobody's Dremel Master.
There are tutorials for a DIY hamon using some form of acid etching; e.g., here, here, and here.
Good luck!

Thank you. I believe i have an idea for a stencil. Hopefully window blinds stacked to make a stencil works. Ill stack a few and glue em back to back, i dont believe the thickness of 1 e.a. blind will hold against the brushes. Then ill take the stencil to the blade and go to work. Dont know if anyones ever tried anything like this idea, im sure someone has haha

Somebody on this thread saved my butt when I couldn't get a tsuka off of a tanto by showing me how to make a tool for doing it. Worth a shot!
