I was wondering how much experience people have with kydex and cold? Or kydex in general, what are it's advantages? Is it easily broken?

I will give details tomorrow. But kydex does not do well in cold.

Oh shoot I had a feeling. It looks kinda thin in my APOC scabbard, and I had a feeling it wouldn't hold up to Canadian winters at all. To be honest Ive always wondered the appeal kydex has
Looking forward to your input tomorrow

OK...so true story. About 10ish years ago, I went to a SCA tournament in Windsor in Late January. 4 of us, big car, armor in the trunk. Motel overnight. We all had some kydex as some piece of hidden armor or other. I slipped on ice, dropped my armor bag, got myself put together and went in. My Kydex breastplate shattered, and cracked a few plates in my vambraces. We all had breaks of one form or other.
So, over the years, we've had experiments, but cold and kydex don't mix if you put any stress on it. Just how cold, I have no idea, but most of my experiments it was between 10-20F.
So, is it bad in cold, NO. But put it on when its warm, your body will keep it warm enough....
How's that? What are you looking to learn?

Oh yeah, you Midrealm folks extend into Canada. I forgot that. No problems like that with kydex here in Meridies, but our leather gets soft and rotten.
But back on topic, I’ve not had problems with smaller kydex sheaths in Massachusetts winters, albeit with limited exposure time outdoors. The longer sheath on the Brutus would worry me. More chance for stuff to happen to it. Honestly, I have not been impressed with the APOC sheaths I’ve seen at Blade. They seem pretty flimsy. A quick and dirty wood core might be a good idea.

Is it good in warm weather at least? I was hoping someone would go "yea it's made up of glued and pressed fibers, so it should be okay" or something, admittedly haha. I see kydex used so often I wondered if it had some sort of magical properties

Yea this is unfortunate. I suppose if it's a quick and dirty wood core I wouldn't have to worry about it being damaged, and could save the fiberglass and kydex for warm, humid months, of i ever bring a sword with me camping for nothing My main goal was to have a sword I can bring in the woods for no reason, on three/five day long trips

Heat...it may soften, but won't deform at heat a human can take. But in a trunk or anything over 150f or so...all bets are off. But even leather can freeze and crack, or get wierd in heat.

I rememeber I read that gun holsters are generally okay in the cold, even when made of kydex, because it's close to the body. I'm gonna cross my fingers kydex is the same. I really like the retention system, as it gives me a really nice way of carrying the sword. Might be my favourite carry system. But the kydex feels thin and flimsy

I wonder if you can wrap it in something. Maybe flattened paracord? That could help keep everything together, and hold the bits together even if something bad did happen. The paracord could even be an additional piece of kit if it’s not attached permanently.

I can say I've never had problems with knife sheath or gun holsters, but they've always been very close to my body.
FWIW, I live in SE Michigan, just next to Windsor.

Mrbadexample : one thing I like using is a mix of hockeytape and epoxy, layered. I call it poor man's kydex. Perhaps I'll put a layer on it
Unistat: Michigan eh? I've always considered you guys Canadians with freedom. What sort of wear do they normally get put through?

I've always considered you guys Canadians with freedom. What sort of wear do they normally get put through? Some of us do have a slight Canadian accent, eh? The gun holster gets worn every day. So stuff out on my property, walking around, in and out of the car, and the like. But it's an IWB holster so it's not exposed to much temperature swing. The knife sheaths are a little more exposed, but not by much. All of my longer work edged tools (i.e. machetes) have a combo nylon/kydex scabbard, with the majority of the construction being nylon.

We never have that problem here in Trimaris. I'd hang around and chat longer, but I've got to go scrub mold off my leather, and polish my swords again.

We've never had any customer issues with kydex in hot environments. While we have had some issues with loops (shock, fatigue) in the cold the sheaths themselves have been fine. Fabric or leather straps and loops seem a good way around that though. Take care, Andrew and the team at Kailash
