Hi guys, Really needing some help and advice. I am totally new to swords and am looking to buy my first with a budget of around €250 (around $300) Kind of not fussed which style, just want something which will be fun , solid enough for some test cutting and looks pretty. Historical accuracy isnt top of my list so was thinking maybe the Honshu broadsword? Others on my list are Windlass Ulfberht, windlass Munich town guard. Is this the right direction to go? If you could think of anything else please let me know your opinion and if its relevant, i live in Ireland so buying from over the pond is not a possibility i'm afraid. Thanks so much in advance for your wisdom.

Wow, you asked the question the site is set up to answer. So I'll point you at how I started. First, HERE: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/Lots of fun links. Then, after figuring out what flavor you like, go here, to see if there's an easy review. www.sword-buyers-guide.com/sword-reviews.htmlOnce you've half narrowed it down more, search the forum for more info and ask questions. Oh...and WELCOME!

I suggest you consider being patient, use the time to educate yourself and watch the classifieds here daily for what you are looking for. It may take a while and assuming you are male, the desire for immediate gratification will be hard to resist but...I suspect patience will reward you with a more enjoyable first experience. The thrill of the hunt can often be more enjoyable than the purchase.

Welcome!
My favorite budget sword is the Hanwei Cawood. I’m not sure what they go for nowadays, though.
The Hanwei/Tinker line also gets lots of praise, though I have no personal experience. Good hunting!

I too welcome you. There are many to choose from as others will state so I'm not going to confuse the issue further.

Thank you all so much for your replies. So would any of the swords in my original post be any good? The Cawood is a bit out of budget i'm afraid and i find the Tinker longsword a little drab looking. Kind of leaning towards the Town guard as it looks pretty or if there is a mortuary hilt somewhere that fits my budget? There seems so much on offer its kind of overwhelming and i'm scared of buying a poor blade and having to explain to the wife i bought a lemon!

I have never owned a Windlass sword but I always have read that they are rather hit and miss depending on the model. The Munich Town Guard is generally regarded as one of their best if I'm not mistaken. I found a review from some years ago here. Hope that helps and welcome!

Nice one, thank you. Having a browse i found the review on the Windlass European Functional sword which says it a great piece if you can find it as its now discontinued, i found one here link for little money and they also sell the Munich town guard for a good price too so i'm stuck deciding now!
