There is a new Medieval period movie being released in two weeks directed and produced by Ridley Scott; "The Last Duel". The Last Duel is a 2021 historical drama film, directed and produced by Ridley Scott. It is based on the book of the same name by Eric Jager, with a screenplay by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. The film stars Damon as Jean de Carrouges, a knight who challenges his friend and squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) to a duel after Carrouges's wife (Jodie Comer) accuses Le Gris of raping her; Affleck also stars. Jean de Carrouges became infamous in medieval France for fighting in the last judicial duel permitted by the French king and the Parliament of Paris. Wikipedia article on Jean de Carrouges; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_de_CarrougesThis should be pretty good for us medieval sword nuts and may spur more interest in the hobby/period.

From my limited knowledge about armor, looks to me like they got the mail coifs right - pretty form fitting, and with padding underneath. That's a good sign. Looks interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing this too. I also hope Matt Damon's character brings back interest in the mullet.

This was filmed here in Ireland. Matt Damon was effectively stuck here for a few months when Covid hit. He rented out an ex-Formula One driver's mansion in South Dublin for the duration. He became sort of a local celebrity.
Seems like a nice guy. When the media arrived in the locale to try and interview the locals about him they were told to mind their own business. One lady memorably said that Matt was a guest in the area and he and his family were entitled to their privacy and the TV cameras could feck right off.
The mullet, though. Yikes.

Historically accurate haircut I think... as was this... Charlton Heston as Chrysagon de la Cruex, a Norman knight circa 11th c in the movie "The War Lord", a favorite movie of my youth that I am sure influenced my interest in the High middle Ages and ultimately medieval swords.

Thanks for posting this. I don't have cable or anything so I don't see a lot of movie previews. But this looks pretty awesome. I do like most of Ridley Scott's stuff. I'll watch for it.

I LOVED Prometheus.

Reading the Wikipedia page about the real events, there's a really telling description of a sword glancing off plate armour despite the wielder kneeling on top of his opponent and stabbing repeatedly.
Maybe in the 1380s pollaxes weren't yet de rigueur, but having one sure would've been handy. I presume they'd have been using xvia or xva longswords with full plate at this time?

Just saw the movie this evening...the production invested a lot of money in reasonable historically accurate visuals and the combat scenes were great. The final combat scene / dual was a great portrayal of the brutality of medieval combat.
The story line seemed to be pretty fair representation of the book and the known historical facts. Interesting approach to the film, showing the storyline from the prospective of each of the story's three protagonists.
Definitely worth seeing..

Off to see it myself in an hour. Edit: Wow, thought it was amazing. Agree about the final duel, glad it wasn't afraid to be brutal.

Not bad at all but some of the script uses borrowed lines. Scripted as perspectives, like Rashomon (1950)

Haven't seen it yet but a friend did and liked it. Came to me to ask about the historical accuracy of the movie and stuff. From his description seems they did a good job keeping it in its period and were very accurate to the book it's based. Though the book it's based on tended to victimize the rapist more than the lady raped compared to other versions of the story.
This is the type of story that shows how much hasn't changed in the last 700 years. Influence, money and power still rule the courtroom. Makes you wonder how something like say the OJ Simpson trial would've ended had they done a judicial duel rather than a money and media fueled trial, lol?
Of course there's falacy in judicial duels. Basically might is right in such a situation so of course "the weak peasant with no combat training is going to loose to the knight that raised his farm and raped his wife" etc etc... but still its an interesting look at how unevolved society is when it comes to corruption and influence.

The fight over the syndication payments for the money and media fueled television special would still be getting adjudicated..............and the beer commercials would be available on a classics disk. Oh, and Chuck Norris would have stomped Simpson's ass.

I am curious, and it's alright if you would instead PM to avoid spoilers, of course, but was it a for sure thing in the movie? In the book, it was more of he say - she say with some decent arguments to be made both ways involving the amount of distance he would have had to travel by horse to reach her in the time frame, etc. In the book, it seemed to be painted as a decent chance it could have been false. Without a rape kit being done, almost every he said / she said situation could be false.

Finally saw the movie and Director Scott really hit a home run. Pretty rough world, let alone for a young lady to navigate. Final fight really makes you want to carry a Rondel dagger.
