Hello all, I was browsing an auction site and on a lark, put down a 99 Euro bid on what was listed as a Swedish M1889 Sabre. Somehow despite a 180 Euro estimate I ended up winning. The sword itself isn't in amazing condition, no scabbard, what looks like rough sharpened edges, either a weird photograph or something weird going on with the tip and some rust/pitting I will need to clean. But for about 130 Euro + shipping it might be worth it even if it is totally useless. Now, being the curious person I am I went about trying to find information on the sword pattern itself and came up even more empty handed than I do trying to find information on Swiss swords.
Does anyone have any pattern information on this one? It seems like the blades vary from 80-90 something CM in length as they have listed mine as a 107cm OAL (which I find dubious but we will see). I would say at the shorter end they'd feel like standard backswords but the longer they get the closer to thrust-only they'd become, almost a bit like the infantry version of the M1893, a sword I don't think I could ever win a duel with but could probably thrust through a tank in. Hardwood grip, single knuckle guard. I look forward to handling it if only out of morbid curiosity. Thank you for any information you may have!
Unfortunately, I have no independent info to offer.
This seller has what they call an 1889 artillery officer saber, which at first glance looks similar to yours but in officer trim; at least based on the few photos.

Thank you for the reply. I've seen a few, some with the double fullers, some with the blade style on mine that is similar to the M1893 pallasch with the hexagonal...for lack of a better term...shape. Not sure what is up with the tip but it looks like the central flat portion wavers? Could also just be a bad photo. I vaguely recall a site with information on some other Swedish swords. I should also be bringing in an M1831 Mounted Artiller sabre AKA the giant 1796 pattern, I do love how unique the Swedish designs were.

Aren't saber's supposed to be curved?

rschuch: As anyone who's seen Excalibur knows, getting the sword INTO the rock isn't the problem, it's getting it back out again.

durinnmcfurren: Movie turned out better than it had any right to be considering how many times a blade was shoved into rock. Yes, even once would be too much, but it was way more than once.

Ramses1079: Yeah me too, which is a shame because he’s a good author. I guess that’s like when your favorite band releases a new album, and there’s always one or two tracks that you’re like “what were they thinking?”

AndiTheBarvarian: Dunno, I like the Vimes and Mort novels but found several other boring.
