well I think the title says it all what age where you when you finally got to itch the scratch of having your first real sword?
As for me it was 17 and I got a cheness tenchi 9260 and had fun out chopping trees and other things in the yard and water bottles and many other inappropriate targets for a katana in general

First katana was a $60 Musha from Amazon, to see if I liked the general styling. First sword was a Windlass Raptor.

16, didn't even have my driver's license yet. It was a cheap stainless Iaito, but it was presented to me by my first Sensei when I tested for Shodan. We would train with one Iaito the whole time, but it wasn't considered "ours" until after the Shodan exam.

17. My Tae Kwon Do instructor gave me an iaito as a going-away present when I went to college. I had that thing for about 35 years. I'd been dying to have a katana ever since I read Clavell's Shogun at 15.

At 49, I bought a fourth generation Hanwei PK through Mike Crampton spring 2003. Used in many hands over the years.

I actually don't recall. Early to mid 20s I would guess. My first was the SBG Kuramono.

I'm actually shocked at the age range do any of you think its from the average 16-22 year old not having the disposable income for a katana or sword in general

My first sword was a Japanese Type 32 cavalry saber I got at age 16, and the first katana was a mid-1400's Norimitsu I bought at a gun show when I was 29.

I got the 'itch' when I was 8, probably from a mix of cartoons and videogames. On my twelth birthday my uncle bought me a cheap templar dagger from a site called swordswords lmao. It was so cheap, it broke on the second day, blade popped right out of the handle just from drawing it. I got a 'wakizashi' when I was 14, it was more like the typical mall ninja stuff you see today, stainless steel blade but it was actually sharp and thick so it was more like a machete with a japanese esque profile and cord wrap lol, my dad actually used it to chop dead tree limbs. Finally I got my first "real" sword when I was 16, it was the last samurai musha blade from a flea market, I was super proud cause I bought it with my own money....3 weeks later my mom sent me to christ camp because she thought the devil was possesing me to buy weapons for the end times lol.

2002 I was 32 years old. My first real katana was a custom Bugei from Paul Chen. A very nice sword. although I am not into them, I wish I still had that one.
