It's a Moro gunong or punyal from the southern Philippines. They became more common in the early 20th century when the US colonial rulers suppressed the carrying of swords (like the kris).
Looks like it might be WWII or a little earlier. The scabbard is in a style that, I am told, only became common in the 1930s, and post-war examples are often lower quality. This looks like an excellent blade, so my guess is 1930s or 1940s (but it could be later - they didn't stop making good blades).

I've seen more than a few of these around but I'm blanking on the name. I'm even hesitant to call it Middle-Eastern as some part of my brain is nagging that they might be Indonesian...
Timo and others will hopefully rescue us both.
Edit: There he is. Philippines, that was my second guess.

Honestly, I want more pics. I need to drool more. And if I may ask, how much did he pay for it? Call me curious. If you don't want to post it here, you can PM me. But that is a cool find!

Me too on more pics. One of the whole unsheathed knife at least. Looks great. And after looking at Andi’s link , while it could be rosewood it could also be paduak. I have a knife with paduak scales and it looks very similar to what you have.

I have a late little one with silvered copper fittings. A horn grip and the blade is amazing but falls into the later category. A constant desk companion for me. Before and after a little Silver Secret. The blade is real sparkly like maybe meteoric. During polishing the blade (quite hard) adopted in 2009. Cheers GC

Oh, that one's pretty. Very nice.
I might need to pick one of these up, myself, though it's not a primary interest...
