www.kultofathena.com/product/moro-panabas-2/By my reckoning this could easily be used as a relatively long one-hander with a grip in the middle of the handle (i.e. where the effective POB is about seven inches)n all the way to choking up on the handle all the way for very nimble close quarters work. Very much thinking I want one now.

I don’t have any firsthand experience with the Panabas, but I’m a big fan of TFW products in general.

I don’t have any firsthand experience with the Panabas, but I’m a big fan of TFW products in general. Indeed! Alas, I have two problems. One, I'm trying to rein in my collection, yet have at least one blade from a number of manufacturers, and I was already eyeing TFW's Dan Dao, to rehilt with a sabre-ish crossguard instead of its circular guard. On top of that--again, to keep the collection size sane--my deal to myself is "one in, one out." That's why I unloaded the CS Polish Sabre and the LDriggers messer; I couldn't resist a couple more project blades. Bad enough I can't decide what to cut loose for even one of these TFWs. Trying to come up with two would break my heart! :'(

(Uh, there's a plea out there to the rest of you. Maybe if someone gets one and does a good review, I can live vicariously enough through it to survive this. Bueller? Bueller? :) )

Very sensible policy, and impressive self control.
I do have the Dan Dao. It’s a nice handling saber to my hand, especially for its large size. To my eye, the blade is more an Elmslie Type 4C+ than a niuweidao, and would make quite the impressive falchion or messer. I don’t know what the tang looks like. The pommel sorta implies a full length tang, but Filipino blades often just have a stick tang, which would complicate such a project.
I know you probably knew this, but Skallagrim did a review of the new “improved” TFW Panabas:
I also recall a thread here on SBG discussing the change in design. Not a full review, but maybe worth digging up.

And yup, your thoughts on the Dan Dao blade seeming more like a 4C+ falchion/messer than anything were my exact inspiration for it as a project blade. Ach, decisions, decisions...

Alas, they didn't use the design change to sharpen what would be the front edge on an antique. It's still a backwards panabas :(
