Another great video. I'm impressed by the double cut through simulation targets. Now I'm going to have to go on a watching binge of your other reviews.

Are you uploading these as private and then posting direct links here? I don't seem to see them listed in the upload stream of your Youtube channel. These would make a great playlist.

You're correct, to avoid police looking at my test cut videos and trouble me LOL. Add my facebook. I always post on my timeline as "friends only". www.facebook.com/chanlancelot/

That sucks. I'm sorry you don't live in a more permissive/free environment. Ironically, I do not have a Facebook account. Many years ago I used to do software/web-dev and wrote some Facebook apps. I was not a fan of the security issues I saw, so never created a personal account.
Fortunately, I can now check back here for your updates. I'd bet you could build a solid following on a sword review channel if it weren't for local "complications".

Back then when I still put test cut videos as public, I never had a following. It was till I got a visit by police did I turn all my test cutting videos private again. Many of my videos are in the backyard cutting portion of the forum, though not all. I did not bother posting every video here since not many people replied. I even stopped posting on myarmoury.com due to no replies. LOL. But I'm very glad you like my videos. It's a motivation for me to keep posting them here.

Always appreciated, but priority one is please don't do anything that could get you in trouble or cause unpleasant police visits.
We value your life and safety over your forum posts!
As a request, have you ever done a meta-review thread? Something like ranking the 10 best cutters of (insert target type here), 10 best fit/finish below (insert price point here), 10 most durable, etc? With your experience and simulation targets, I'd be curious for your thoughts

As a request, have you ever done a meta-review thread? Something like ranking the 10 best cutters of (insert target type here), 10 best fit/finish below (insert price point here), 10 most durable, etc? With your experience and simulation targets, I'd be curious for your thoughts Never done that, but that's a good idea. I can give you some analysis I've gained along the years. Some of the insights were only obtained very recently, after so many years of experiment on the field. Now let's fix a sword's cross section and edge sharpness (angle and polish) first. The said sword would gain more cutting power if it's shorter, contrary to my former understand. It's because when it's shorter, it rotates faster, thus have more velocity for cutting. Also more body mass will be involved when the cutting spot is closer to the hand. However, usually when it is shorter, it's also lighter, and lose that velocity quickly once coming in contact with the target. So such a short sword would do way better if it has some mass on it, like a broader design that would not affect drag as much as a thicker design. That mass also better be around the tip so that the tip can carry on the velocity longer after impact. It's only good for the shorter designs, for the longer designs will be way heavier with such tip heavy setup and will take away the velocity significantly. The handle's length also play a big role. For good rotational velocity, the grip span cannot be too far apart. I've done numerous research on this and found out the ideal grip span to be 2.5 to 3 fists, using handshake grip. This explains why John Lundemo often prefers making swords with relatively short hilt / grip. This will cut A LOT better. And also explains why the earlier warsword in Europe and many longswords later on, actually had a similar hilt length that is extremely unlike the feder's grip length we see in HEMA nowadays. Because back then cutting power matters, not just tagging hits. With this understanding in mind, it would not be difficult so see why some swords cut SO MUCH better than the others. So far the best cutting swords I've used are listed below: 1. Longship Little Cutie (Dha at 40.75") 2. Longship Custom Silvia (S shape blade at 42") Both are relatively short and massive with a tight gripping hilt, fitting to the theory above. 3. Cold Steel Grosse Messer (straight sword at 42") This one requires heavy modding in the edge to bring its cutting power to fullness. But once done, this one cuts extremely well. 4. Neighborhood sword broad katana (a 3.5cm wide blade katana) 5. Longship No Remorse (34.5" straight blade with 12" hilt. The length decreased its rotational velocity and made it inevitably slower than the ones ranking above) 6. Longship Giant Silvia / Reborn Nagamaki (40" blades, one with S curve and one with single curve. The extreme length made them slower but John Lundemo's extreme cross section made up for the speed loss. Long hilt though due to my requests and ended up taking me years to figure out how to grip them the best) 7. Simon Maru (a custom sword with S blade at 88cm length, tight grip span) 8. Ronin katana #31 O katana (a 33" blade katana, extra thick to add the mass but also some drag unfortunately) 9. Cold steel katana (too thick to be cutting good) 10. Cold steel O katana (too thick and also long to be cutting good)

a student of mine kept using big cuts in sparring. When I asked him why did he expose himself so much, he said he was having test cut in mind during the bout. I said even a small cut properly powered, can take off a forearm. He did not have confidence in such cuts. So I gave him a demo.

Another excellent video. Thank you for showing that a massive baseball or golf swing wind up is not necessary if the cut is executed well.
Regarding the "best cutter" list I can't help but notice most of them are of European design (which makes sense). Of the katana you have tested (excluding O-dachi, just standard lengths) are there any models or manufacturers that have stood out to you as good equipment?

Actually there's no european designs on the best cutter list. LOL..... all were hybrid or oriental, except that cold steel grosse messer, which resembles chinese dao more due to the relatively lack of distal taper. Small cuts work for weak points attack, cutting small targets. Big cuts have their places too. It's like a jab vs a straight punch. Both are useful for different purpose. Neighborhood sword's broad katana is pretty good mass produced katana-length sword.

Wow, do I ever finally feel vindicated after all these years! (rofl) I've always liked my old CS Grossy a lot (even w/o your I'm sure awesome mods) and felt like a fairly lonely voice in the wilderness defending it. (Don't even get me started on my feelings on the infamous MA review of it. :P ) It's a big of a chunker for sure, and given the slow recovery on some strikes I'd have to be in some armor and putting it to battlefield use to be comfortable. Still, and while I have seen more grudging acceptance of it in recent years, it still feels good to have someone knowledgeable who doesn't just label it a big piece of feces. :)
