Grip length on Deepeekas have always been too long, and especially on their Vikings, throw off the appearance of them. Makes them look distorted and pulled longer. I fully agree. This one isn't that bad at being only 1/4" too long. From my conversations with Deepeeka, the longer grips are because their distributers ask them to be longer. I do believe their newer Vendel and Fetterlane swords have the correct length grips That is the one thing that has stopped me from getting one of the Vendels from them.

Hey Jash, long time no talk! I have been debating if this is the right St. Maurice for me. And I think I may want to try it, but I can't find it anywhere! Only all the other various versions by Deepeeka, as well as A&A, and Hanwei. Any idea if there is somewhere that not ally stocks it?! Or is it not even out yet?

Haven't had much time for the Forum these past few months. I thought I'd answer your question here in case others are wondering the same as you. So I did ask Deepeeka a few questions regarding this. I also did not see it for sale anywhere on the web lol. Not only that, the prototype picture on Deepeeka's website is still the older version (before any of the above changes). I asked them if this sword is available for sale, and if it'll be this version or the one on their website or something in between. So far I managed to ascertain that this exact version will NOT be what they will be producing for retail - especially the Brass Scabbard. As for the changes in Hilt Design - I await their confirmation. Although not out in the market yet - you can always buy directly from Deepeeka. Just a heads up (personal experience) - shipping now is terrible. Last I bought from them, i believe it was $200 US for 4 swords - so $50 US a sword (which was the most cost effective option lol). I also await their reply in regards to when this model will be ready for sale.... From my research: If you want a sword that handles like the original - Hanwei. If you want a sword that looks like the original - Deepeeka. Hope that helps! I'll update once i hear back from Deepeeka regarding the other questions i asked them.

I would love to ask them about their Saxes. They always make sheaths for them with the blade on the bottom side horizontally, when historically they were usually blade up. This has always puzzled me.

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

Great review! A few months back i watched Arn and got fixated on adding a crusader sword to the collection. There's a lot out there and was told to wait for the Deepeeka, but the Hanwei came up for sale at a good price so I went that way. I made some repairs to the gap and grip and I really like it now, so after reading your review, I'm happy with my choice. I'm not a stickler for authenticity and would rather have something that handles better than just looks pretty.

For your last comment there ^ I would have recommended the exact same thing. The Hanwei for overall feel and balance. Congrats on your purchase!

So just noticed KOA now has these in stock! www.kultofathena.com/product/deepeeka-the-sword-of-st-maurice-vienna/# From just a quick glance: - They kept the updated pommel and guard. - Kept the ferrules. - Dimensions pretty close to the one i received. But: - Scabbard is leather over wood (which was expected, so no biggie). - For some reason they changed the silver colour wire grip to brass....

Well, they stopped making swords with distal taper. This is once again a flat bar, back to the old days of Deepeeka being reenactment swords. As a result, it has put on even more weight on the upper portion of the blade. The center of gravity is shifted even further away from the grip, about 9" with a 3 lbs 5 oz monster. Per KoA Thickness 4.8 mm - 4.6 mm Weight 3 lbs 5 oz P.O.B. 8 5/8"

Oh geez..... there was hope.... This is sad though, I guess maybe it's a problem with consistency? But still, for under $200 you're getting quite a bit of good.
