I just noticed some new Baltimore Knife and Sword daggers at Kult of Athena. I also noticed they're classified as Battle Ready (instead of Sport Combat, like the BKS long blades). KoA is offering sharpening service on them !?
I've handled plenty of BKS swords at Ren Faires, etc. Daggers are listed as 'medium carbon steel'. Curious what the hardness is like, how it affects usefulness of the edge. For, you know, when I'm trying to shave with a 16" dagger, or baton a telephone pole for kindling.
Thoughts?

I would write it off in terms of a dagger for anything aside from costume and stage. Though listed as battle ready, the proof would be in the pudding. The warranty is listed for stage use. Pommel and guard welded on. For me, the corny spiral wrapped grip may, or may not last in use.
Shoot Matthew a message, or even call. If KOA is offering sharpening, they must have cleared it with BKS. The steel type is not given. I rather doubt it would be sustainably hard.
Both of your hypotheticals are kind of silly. Batoning a dagger doesn't work out very well.

Would still love to hear anyone's hands-on experience with a sharpened BKS piece - especially one of their Bowies, seaxes, khukuris, etc. Perhaps they use different steel/treatment for pieces intended as sharps.
