Well, I am going to mess some things up here, what does anyone think of Opinel Knives? I love their classic looks though I am curious what everyone else thinks of these French flip knives.

I think they are great for what they are. Prices are going up. I had one as a utility knife until I pushed it too far while using it as a pry bar, The blade snapped. These are great buys for putting a few around where you need a knife,
The German Mercator K55K is another ubiquitous beauty but higher priced.
Cheers GC

God ol Opinel. There is no doubt that there are better knives out there. When wet they are a pain to get open, I have one no 8. I rarely use it. But you cant judge them without price in mind, they are cheap and still made in their homeland of France.
While they are limited in use, they are both cheap and iconic. So why not try one out? Its good value for money.

I love the one I have. Super cheap and super handy to have when facing office or retail work like cardboard, paper, plastic or rope. Can't comment for outdoor work, sorry. :S

As a huge fan of old-world, classical knives, and one who values affordability over style, I appreciate Opinel. I'm sure I had one as a child, but now I only have a no 10 "effilé" model, because I wanted the slimmer profile, but didn't think it would be so thin. As such, I carry other knives, but I do like it for what it is.

The carbon steel ones are great, and hold a very keen edge. I've carried them for decades. IMHO, they're the best buy for the money.

I been planning to get myself one of these for a while they look so none threatening and utility, without being all plastic and orange/yellow like anything modern, in aesthetic.

I think "meh". They are good, but the round wood handle doesn't carry well in the pocket. They are more of a knife you would use at home or throw in a backpack or something. I rarely find myself using it for anything, it stays in a pocket of my back pack as a spare in case I lose my Morakniv.
For daily carry I settled on the Mercator K55K. The reason being is that it's a good locking knife, but carries so well in the pocket that I don't even know it's there.

I had one as a kid. Even then, I loved the simplicity. It ended up broken, but I never forgot it. I have had a series of No. 8s (the same model I had as a kid) ever since I started carrying a pocket knife again in the '90s.
Like TS, says, the carbon steel ones sharpen nicely. And they are still made in France. I switch off between the Opi and my Mercator K55K as my general gardening knife.

LOL, I had one a couple years back. I got a stainless steel one recently for my own purposes. I loved the carbon one and I even gave it the nickname Opie. I loved that knife and used it almost everyday. I am a minority apparently to my country (Native) and well carried it for both self defense, utility and for its none offensive tool like appearance. It has a soft spot for my heart and I really did enjoy it. Lost it after giving it as a gift.
