What would have to change about the shape of this to make it a type XIIa? It seems rather pointy for a XIIIa.
Beautiful as well!

I was wondering on the type of this sword between XIIa and XIIIa. We know that in the type XIIa the blade taper is more strongly. In this sword the blade is quite wide to the end so I marked it as XIIIa. It will always be a moot point, because we can even read about it in typology of Ewart Oakeshott.

Pretty much you have 2 out of 3 making it more a XIIIa over a XIIa. Basically when differentiating XIIa from XIIIa the three key points to look at are, 1) fuller termination and width. XIIIa have a distinct thin fuller that doesn't go past 3/4 of the blade's length on average. Whereas XIIa fullers tend to be broader and tapering and can reach 7/8 of the blades length. 2) blade profile taper. XIIIa also tend to be more parallel down the blade length. This isn't a be all end all though as most XIIa are also quite parallel. 3) Tip termination. This is a bigger point to look at as defining feature of the XIIa is a acute tip where as on the XIIIa it's spade shaped or spatulate to focus on cutting. Basically your sword had 2 out of the 3 key features of a XIIIa, the spatulate tip, and thin fuller so I'd go with XIIIa.

These points are all more obvious in the video, which I had not watched . The tip didn't look particularly spatulate in the photos while viewing on my phone. It just looked like a fatter type XIIa. Awesome video by the way. Probably the best relatively short advertising and showing of sword. 4 minutes!

Thank you friends for all conents and a very good, detailed analysis of the sword typology. It also heped me make sure. I think that making films with swords I can show real shape and all details, than if we make pictures and the sword lies on the flor for example :-).

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.
