Step 1: Buy a Hanwei Practical Katana XL
- it's cheap but super solid and has a good blade, which is basically all I needed. No Picture since everybody knows how a PK-XL looks like.
Step 2: Buy tons of other stuff including a snake skin, a themed koshirae, work tools and a leather ito.
- start swearing and cursing at your skills which, at this point in time (it's my very first attempt), are basically below zero.
Step 3: Open the damn thing
- Hammer the tsuka out.
- Strip those horrible plastic panels from it.
Step 4: Cut the snake skin in shape and apply in the beveled channel.
Step 5: Notice the tsuba won't fit the nakago and start growing your biceps half an inch with some old school filing until it fits
- Also notice how the thickness is different and you have to remove the bottom sappa to get a fit.
Step 6: Wrap the new ito
- Observe how you suck at it and redo it.
- Still sucks, redo it again.
- Give up.
- Come back the next day and try again.
- Still sucks. Proceed to step 7.
Step 7: "Maybe" hishigami will help
- make hishigami from a box of Findus fish fingers
- Feel ashamed.
- More.
- Enough. Proceed with the ito.
Step 8: Wrap the new ito with hishigami
- Observe how it still sucks but you improved A LOT.
Step 9: Tie the end knots
- Ponder how stupidly hard is it because your ito is not good quality being a simple leather flat cord bought on Etsy for £4.99.
- Tie the knots. It's loose. Don't care.
Step 10: Post your first crapjob on the forum.
- Feel a little bit more shame.
- Now feel proud anyway.
Step 11: Pretend to ignore there's a saya to do
- Leave it for another time. It can wait.
