,,If it was felt to be a hit&run, why bother to reply at all''.
To find out.
I would like to suggest the following:
To have a ,,First time users questions" section on the top of the frontpage with an explanation as to what would be expected of the poster as to measurements, images, etc. With a clear statement that asking about value is not allowed. All in neon font, so it cannot be missed. Something like Deutsche Blankwaffen has. (although they do not do the neon bit :) ) If a member sees something that interests him/her that would be the place to go to. No more one day wonders in the other sections clogging the works. If some slip through the net the mods can place the post in the right section. Maybe bombard Edelweiss as Chief of Ceremony to rule the all new FTUQ section with iron fist?
Just a thought.
Cheers.

And I am out of this cat fight.
You can go on and on trying to score a little point to sooth the busted ego. I don't give a toss either way. Without good images there is nothing to say really.
Cheers.

Ego drives _your_ own perspective, even in email. There is no cat fight here, just _our_ own obstinance. Yes, I'll pluck a few more strings for posterity. I have heard your verse for this song and I have some more others have shared. From Maxime Chouinard via www.facebook.com/groups/iascpost/It does look very close to that last one here, identified as French hussar officer Ca 1760. Officer patterns were not followed to the letter back then, if at all, so there is a lot of variation.Of course, no opinion matters but our own. The original poster might have done well to avoid us SBG experts entirely and repost to fb. From Marc Marbot Maxime Chouinard this is correct officier sabre French from 3th quart 18thShall we sallet forth to tilt at windmills? GC Attachments:

Marc Marbot James Meaney The parts seems orginal...question is if they all belong to eachother....also when were they combined. The garde de branch is from a M.1776/1786 hussard trooper sabre...the backstrap is out of it's shape. The olive and ring of the middle part seems added...to say French...is difficult...in the US this kind of model could have been used in the Independence war...most likley a private made piece but as i said...was this hilt the first one...?

I've read recently of a better book list than relying on the Jean L’Hoste books, I'll see if I can find Maxine's list on facebook. French is not my primary study either and why I had bothered to recommend the fellow post here. The criticisms of L’Hoste’s books, according to one post I recently read were: 1. They are poorly organised, grouping everything by hilt construction i.e Cross guards, single bar, triple bar etc. 2. He is prone to making un-sourced claims. The ‘Gold standard’ of books on French swords appears to be SABRES FRANCAIS 1680-1814 by Christian Blondieau and the Christian Aries’ series. Les sabres des hussards - L'histoire des sabres des hussards de Louis XIV à nos jours and the three volumes of Des sabres et des épées by Michel Pétard also come recommended. Unfortunately all of these are out of print and a challenge for a new collector such as myself to source.

Thanks for the additional pages. The French books are way down the must have list but it is great to see some of them shared. I could only now, as then, when the sword appeared that I could only start with the 1767 as the start, as that was my knowledge.
Cheers GC

hi I have the option to buy this saber. France 1777. Unfortunately, no scabbard. Is everything ok with her? And the difficult question, how much would you price it? I always have a dilemma whether to buy a saber without a scabbard and how much can I give for it. Thank you in advance for your help.
