Anyone else come from an interest in European medieval swords find looking at Japanese swords on sites like CAS Iberia, etc., to be a little confusing?
I can look at Albion, Valiant Armoury, or Lockwood and have a fair understanding of what I am looking at. With Japanese swords it feels like the differences in the swords are a lot more subtle even after reading the SBG guides to Japanese swords.

Totally agree. I have never gotten into the Japanese sword. I have just been always focused on Western swords. Seems to be a fascinating subject for those that are interested in it and there are apparently tons of nuance and descriptors I just have never been interested enough to delve into it. Different Strokes for different folks.

Coming from a Japanese sword background, I still can't figure out Oakeshott, Peterson, etc.
More recently I'm struggling on how to tell a kilij from a shamshir, and whether a pala is only defined by the yelman...
Swords are confusing.

What can we help you with in terms of the Japanese sword Kjakker? I am looking for a single decent Japaneses sword in order to have one in my collection. I have encountered the bad mall ninja SLO's but have never had the chance to handled a good Katana. I would like to find something that would fit in quality wise alongside my swords by LK Chen and Neil Burridge.

Swords are confusing. Glad to hear that things are the same coming from the other direction.

If for cutting, what type(s) of target(s)?

Dynasty Forge is good stuff. For decent quality katana, "off the shelf," Hanwei is about the only other brand with consistent offerings in your budget.

I would say Dynasty Forge is a great buy and it's on sale at their site $360 + shipping, can't go wrong, normally a $500+ sword so its a great deal right now.

Do you have any personal experience with Dynasty Forge products? Yes I do, I have owned their chinese saber's and I had an order for a Dynasty Forge Kat through KoA but cancelled it after waiting a couple weeks for it to ship, went with Ryujin on the SBG store and got them both in under 5 days. I do plan on getting a DF Katana within the coming months. What can I answer for you?

Thank for the info. The Huawei Swords link is almost an exact example of the confusion I have. I see eight swords in my price range, from $388.00 to $499.00, and I am having trouble working out what the difference is.

Ok for the huawei link, they list a bunch of models and they are very close to one another, the big differences with those are 1) amount of sori, that means how much the blade curves, 2) blade width, dotanuki blade is wider then a standard katana blade, 3) blade style at the tip of the sword, meaning a traditional katana has what is called a kissaki, you will see some katana's have a tip that has a longer kissaki. It mostly boils down to the fittings cost and blade steel cost.

I just jammed the point of my Palatial Tang Dao into the ceiling.

Thank goodness I'm mature enough to have never damaged my ceiling, or wall, or furniture, or broken a light fixture when playing around with melee weapons.

*looks at multiple holes in ceiling*
Well, at least I've never broken a light fixture...
...that I recall.
We, uh...we don't talk about furniture. Or that one bedspread I really liked...
