Since we haven't had a good ole debate on the subject of if a back mounted sword working or not and we have new members here goes. We're not talking about if it's historically accurate or not just on how practical it is. Some say the sword CAN'T be drawn from a back scabbard. There's a lot of things we do different now than we did back then. We don't ride horses for transportation anymore and we have indoor plumbing now. This is called progress.

Cool video. Nicely done.
I’m a bit of a technosaurus. How do I find your channel on the YouTube?

Really good video. And that’s not Gunnar in the video unless he shaved his head and beard, lost a lot of muscle mass and developed an English accent. Haha.

Pellius, Paul is right it's not my channel and I didn't shave my head and beard or lose any muscle mass. The channel is NateV but also visit a channel KnightSquire I think I got him pissed off when I told him he was WRONG about you can't draw a sword from the back. Still making friends were ever I go.

Ah. Thanks. I guess I didn’t notice the muscle mass thing. Lol.

Some say the sword CAN'T be drawn from a back scabbard. Sure it can. Sew your baldric with a short length of leather strap added so you can stick an extra katateuchi angled behind your right shoulder. Surprises the f**k out of people.

Thanks Gunnar, I loved it. Sure a sword can be drawn from the back. It’s my favourite form of carry. Here’s the second video I made on the subject when I was into katanas and someone called me a fake after the first video.

I believed you, pgandy, the first moment you drew the sword. Funny how hard it can be for people to give up certain notions.
I haven't toyed around much with drawing from my back but it looks like a longer sword such as a katana might have an advantage because of its longer handle and that you can maneuver the tip end with your other hand. I'm trying to think through a rig to draw a shorter sword, 20-25" OAL, from a small backpack.
In playing around with a spear, I've noticed that having a sword or kukri on my hip gets in the way of maneuvering the haft, especially if the sword is hanging diagonally.

I’ll make you a video on my favourite kukri carry. This one will not get in your way.

Try this. That is a 13” kukri I’m using. It gets a bit more cumbersome with a 15” blade but can be done. Actually that doesn’t really show up until you decide to sit. Another note, the vast amount of people judge the scabbard/sword fit by inverting the two and if whatever doesn’t fall out it’s good. While I don’t like for the sword to jiggle around in the scabbard I like them to come out without effort and if they remain in the inverted scabbard it’s too tight for my taste. The current traditional kukri draw is with two hands. I may just have another task for my off hand. From KHHI From Wikipedia

I've tried that guys method. I find it to be uncomfortable to draw, plus I don't like the idea of running a double edged blade beside my neck. But it's one of the more interesting takes I've seen.
Drawing an arming sword should be no problem, even without pulling the scabbard over the shoulder. I've never had a problem drawing my driggers sword (miss flexie) from a back draw
Of course, the humble katana is always my favorite sword for back draw. The longer handle and shorter blade allows you to have the scabbard lower, while the handle is still in reach, plus when you draw, you can slide the spine of the blade along the inside of the saya, keeping you from having to worry if you are cutting up your scabbard. It feels like the curve makes it easier somehow too
Pgandy: I carry my Kukri on a baldric, but I always carry it in front of me, funny enough. I feel like it's more comfortable to draw it while holding it in front of you
Murffy: yea I've had the exact same problem too. When I was training naginata, I would just put the sword either somewhat behind me or almost horizantal to my stomach and stand in a bladed stance. But with something more fixed in place like a long sword, I just hold the spear higher up. I tend to prefer a low, forward stance, taught in I.33, so it kinda helps tuck my sword and dagger away from the "action areas"

Better not miss that scabbard pgandy! For the video I slipped the scabbard inside my pants as that is the easiest way and I don’t mind carrying it in that manner. However there are times that I thread it through the belt leaving it entirely exposed. Either way works. But I'll head your words. 😁

My thought is to use a separate belt from my trousers one and just slide the kukri to the back side. Hard to get at then. Nothing seems perfect. I'm thinking that drawing a kukri mounted on a rucksack would be challenging as well.

As I said above I also thread it between, or if you will under the belt, keeping the scabbard’s tip outside of my pants. For a short carry on my property I have no concerns. In fact I have a belt out there somewhere in never-never land that I hope will arrive in the next few weeks for that purpose.

Maybe more than just chafing. Ouch! 😳

Probably wouldn't be too bad if you tucked it into a sash tied to your belly. That's where I always tie my sash and obi to, I like where it puts the weapons

See even Skallagrim says it's doable more or less. Besides look at his own logo on his sweatshirt, two back mounted swords.
