Hi, everyone
A long time ago, I bought a parang from the Australian Knife Club. From what I can see, these same blades may have been marketed under the Sicut brand. Anyway, it was my favorite parang. I used it until someone stole it (and a couple of other working blades) from my shed a few years back.
I am finally looking to replace it. Can anyone here recommend a good working parang? (I know that "parang" is a broad word - I mean it in terms of a weight forward blade like a parang cendong/chandong.) It does not appear that the AKC and/or Sicut blades are still available. The blade of the Condor option looks like a parang, but the geometry and handle are not right. Basically, I am looking for the real deal.
Thanks for the help!

I haven’t seen any recently, but the Bidor brand is nice. I believe the My Parang guys use prettied up Bidor blades. My main gripe with the Bidors is the grip. It feels like recycled milk jugs, and they get loose very fast. I regripped one with cherry wood, and it works great.

I even managed to find pics. They have non-billhook models too.

Very nice re-handle on your blade, Mr.BE. Did you add a pin, or just go pure epoxy?
I had never bought a Bidor in the past because, IIRC, the blades were simply heat-forced into the plastic handles and were prone to loosening. Just like you said. But, I searched on them, anyway, before posting here this time. No luck. There used to be a few people who resold them on the internet. Now I only see My Parang, which seem fairly pricey for the fit and finish.
It's not like I actually need a new parang. It's just that I was taking down some shrubs this past weekend and that old AKC would have been perfect for the job.

Thanks. It’s got a pin and a tight copper wire wrap to help keep things from wiggling.
Yeah. When the Bidor showed up with the factory grip, I had to laugh. I popped out the nail they used as a pin and gave the spine two gentle whacks on a fence post. Out came the blade.
I hear you about the yard work kindling blade desire. I think I even used that excuse successfully a few times before my wife caught on!

Valiantco are clearing out their stock on eBay. From memory their blades and the AKC parang were made by the same smiths. AKC does still exist but don't have the big blades on their website, not sure if they sold them all or if they're just a hassle to post. www.knivesaustralia.com.au/
