After you have switched to another art for many years... Do you ever feel like, when you go back to katana, you just feel way more confident in your abilities?
I go back to katana and it always feels so familiar in my hands. I always feel confident in what I can do with a katana. I suppose it stems from a practice of cutting with it too, but it just feels so straight forward.
Maybe it lacks the graceful techniques, maybe you have less options. There is so much I can do with a longsword or saber. But when I go back to practicing my drills and kata with a katana, there is always this strong familiarity and confidence in what I do
I recognize I would rather use any other combat technique in a fight. I've done better with many other combinations. But I feel like if zombies ever took over I could always depend on the simplicity of a katana.
Maybe I just need a proper school or something

Also, to add, I've always been praised on my spear ability, as much as I prefer sword. But I've never cut with a spear.
With a katana, I've cut all kinds of targets. I know what to expect. The vibrations, the resistance. Just wondering if anyone else ever feels this way
I love how utilitarian a katana is. It's like cutting with a tomahawk as opposed to a machete

It's like cutting with a tomahawk as opposed to a machete IMHO, the traditional DH katana is magnificent at what it does, which is to efficiently slice into a target like nothing else on the planet. Why I've picked up two types of saber and gone back to practicing the style again, is that while to a great extent the katana fills the offensive role of the French hussar/1796 LC/Blücher linage, it's very limited in the defense, and comparatively worthless in the thrust alongside a good late saber or degen. It's not designed for either thrusting or parrying as major uses, and is less than nimble compared to a Western fencing weapon.
I see a place for both types of weapons and skillsets in one's personal armory, but would select one or the other depending on the tactical environment. I feel that both katana styles, and saber styles. are useful to acquire and practice, as is sword-and-shield, but katana or saber are more useful for unarmored combat.

Glad to see someone agrees haha. Although the katana hate has stopped for the past few years (thankfully), I still feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves from the sword community. Although it gets too much credit from the anime community, they aren't the sword community. I love the percussive element of a katana as well as it's slicing ability. With that extra meat in the blade, it buries itself deeply when chopping. Yea gonna have to agree, about unarmoured too. Not only is it super comfy to wear in an obi, but it's almost overkill in its cutting ability, along with being able to trust well enough Plus another thing I like is the training that comes wirh it. One thing I don't care about as much with longsword is the tutorials. They don't really try train you in cutting correctly. Not as well as JSA does. The cutting techniques I learned with katana are so intuitive and they always help me get good cuts with the sword
