Does anyone have any tips or diy ideas for a sword knot? It's going on a scottish baskethilt. I dont have an actual sword knot, so i was thinking something hand made. Doesn't have to be accurate to history, but it can. Or even a link to a site that carries them?

As in your OP there are two ways to go, DIY or buy. And as mentioned Dave Kelly would be a good source for references to buying. I can search my records if need be. However I find most if not all of those commercial knots to be a copy of some period of a military sword, such as a British Naval Officer in 1850. And then there different knots depending on grade of officer. If you go the DIY route you are pretty much free to do as you like. Below are two that I made from an old shoestring. The swords are light weight being a spadroon and a cutlass. The string is comfortable very flexible and cheap. The keeper, noted in red indicator, is out of cord, again I had on hand. It’s secured to itself, not the shoestring, with watered down white glue. After drying I blackened with a magic marker. It is adequate for my purposes. They can be made of heavier material such as leather and I would recommend for a Scottish baskethilt preferably leather that can be bought in various widths and thicknesses. Here is a leather example of a copy of a M1913 sword knot. The leather is 2.5mm thick, aka 6oz. leather. FIY I have read of several accounts during the 19th century, and I think possibly before of people in a pinch substituting a silk handkerchief. It was always silk and my guess is because slick is cut resistant and the limited number of types of clothe at that time. I have seen no drawings nor photos of how this was done.
