I did some searching but couldn't find an answer.
Other than decorative file work, does anyone know when jimping for utilitarian purposes started to show up on knives? Are there any medieval examples?

Is there a utilitarian use for jimping? I always just thought it was decorative. Just thought of it now, could be for weight reduction. While some I’ve seen look nice I prefer knives without. Good question though and look forward to any discussion on the subject.

Are you guys talking about zimping? I've never seen it called "zimping", but in relation to the image that is what I'm talking about. Found on many a contemporary knife and used to get better purchase/control with tasks that call for it like skinning.

Jimping is filework on the spines. A few possible utilitarian uses might be using the spine as a rasp, that is actually why some modern knives have/had sawbacks. Making grooves in wood for lashing, etc. I have never tried one as a flint striker but that's a possibility. Otherwise decorative, I have a picture of an 18th century sword with jimping that does not seem to have any purpose aside from bling. Cheers GC Purty nordicknives.com/products/lanyard-lock-folder-7

Like AJGBlack, I’ve never seen it called zimping. I can see what Glen is talking about with functionality as a rasp. Just doesn’t appeal to my taste. And yes that knife is very purdy. But what i see is a lot of places for rust to start and difficult cleaning. But that’s just me.
