I picked up this nice, albeit heavily patina’d, Ketland spadroon online the other day for what I think was a very reasonable price, and decided that I’d try to bring it back to some semblance of its former glory. First, I fit my bench grinder with a special custom setup of 2 buffing wheels closely attached next to each other, with the smaller one facing outwards. Then, without using any sort of buffing compound or abrasive or anything, turn the machine on and adjust the power to no higher than halfway, making sure I’m protected with thick leather gloves, safety goggles, and a respirator. Making sure I have both hands firmly gripped around the sword close to where i want cleaned, I slowly run the pommel up & down the wheel with a light touch, letting the cloth/cotton whip off millimeters at a time. Within about an hour, I’d shaved off 200 years or so of accumulated dirt & debris and started to do the same to the blade. I’m not getting near any of the bluing/etching on this with any kind of power tool, but I’d like to clean that area a bit too as there’s a couple spots of rust that I think may be active.

For the finer, detailed cleaning, I use a soft-bristled toothbrush
