Dear all, I have a piece in my collection which I am unsure about, and was hoping you might be willing to take a look at some photos. I used to think that it was a french Hussars napoleonic era sword because it came with an interesting plaque on the sword bag, but thanks to others here I now think it might be either British or Prussian. Thank you for your time, please let me know if you might have any clues!

Qua style of the blade and the half lion head pommel it comes close to a Prussian Artillerie Wachtmeister sabre. As this is a presentation sabre, it does not have to adhere to any regulations, so a basic model could deliver an interesting blade and pommel from stock and further combinations could then be made with other hilt pieces and scabbard styles. What I am trying to say is that in my view this piece is therefore hard to pinpoint as it looks like a combination of parts from various regulation sabres. The Wachtmeister sabre is the one on the left. If I where you I would take it to www.deutsches-blankwaffenforum.de/index.php?s=f29d9b2ab2989ff6dc549e93a5404b18and ask there. There are some heavy duty specialists down there who may be able to tell you more. They have a galery too: www.deutsches-blankwaffenforum.de/galerie/lange_seitenwaffen-1.htmlIf something close pops up just click the image and you'll be taken to the corresponding article. Hope this helps you out a bit. Cheers.

Thank you very much for all of your help! I will definitely check out the forum you mentioned (will do my best to use google translate ha!).
I am assuming that it is incredibly difficulty to guess the period the saber might be from correct?

Look at the first image of my review of the Wachtmeister: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/60621/prussian-artillery-wachtmeister-sabre-1845It looks like the etch on the oldest blade, from 1845, has a lot in common with yours. At least that is what I think I see. So, for starters, I'd say from around 1845. At that time the German - Anglo School of etched decoration still used a mixture of needle etch and rolled pre fab patterns. The way I look at the sabre, it is only in minor details where there is any difference. I really think your sabre was based on the Wachtmeister. As I may be totally wrong it seems like a good idea to indeed go to DB. You have a very nice sabre there, with excellent blue and gild still in great condition, so putting a bit of effort in it to sort it out is not wasted time me thinks. Hope you keep us informed. When you go to DB you'll see at the left at the top, a catalogue one can download. Though this catalogue is from a late date, the patterns of a lot of sabres didn't change that much, so it may help to give one a general direction of where to look. A lot of States had their own patterns which, at first, may be bewildering for the novice. Also for the ,,old hands'' at times. Cheers.
