Hey, I have a question that I would like to ask everyone. Do anyone know where I could find either a good quality Shirasaya tanto or even know a reputable company that could make a custom one?
I ask this because I've been bingeing on the Yakuza series and I honestly love how the "daggers" (That's what the game calls them), and Goro Majima's Demonfire Tanto. After a little bit of research and comparing different tantos, they're considered Shirasaya.
Problem I'm having is that there are currently two websites that I found that I've been a bit skeptical. katanasforsale.com and samuraiswords.store. They have what I'm looking for, but going through their custom Shirasayas they have the SAME options for steel as well as almost one to one custom options. That's where I got suspicious, and looking more information into them only added on to that.
What I was hoping to get for the tanto, is the same length of the handle (15cm or 6 inches), but the blade be on the larger end (14 inches or 36 cm). That's what I currently think is the size of those knives in the Yakuza series.
If you all could help me find out what I need to do, I would be happy to hear what you suggest!

I think those two companies use the same source, shared by many eBay sellers such as RyanSword etc. Neither site, nor the source, are particularly bad, but they're not great, either.
Shirasaya is the style you're looking for, you may also have luck with aikuchi. As for size or source, you might have to go semi-custom to stay on budget. That is, one of the eBay shops like Huawei that can do special orders to your specs.
A while back, Musashi swords used to have a tanto, but its name escapes me right now. Started with an A, I think? Quality was mediocre but it was a decent size, if I recall, for about $100.
I think I've heard the yakuza types refer to their knives as "dosu" but that search term isn't hitting anything useful.

Awesome, out of curiosity what steel do you recommend? I've been leaning towards T10 clay tempered, but I'm not well verse when it comes to other steel types.

Steel doesn't really matter, honestly. I think the Musashi I mentioned earlier (Asuka, I believe it was called) was either 1045 or 1060. Not amazing, but perfectly functional.
T10 out 1095 are good steels at the higher end of carbon content, so treated properly it'll be hard and hold a sharp edge, but that edge may be prone to chipping. Lower-carbon steels might have to be touched up more often, but they're generally considered more durable.

Makes sense, I'm not mainly going to use it for cutting or anything. It's mainly to add to a small collection so the high carbon steel wouldn't be much of an issue with me.

At this point the key thing you want to consider, then, is whether you want a real hamon and what style of blade (sugata) you want.

Traditional style straight blade like on the Yakuza games, and to go with my budget, not a real hamon.
