Hello and greet site. I have 2 swords and I'm looking for opinions as to their authenticity and pattern or model. From the research I've done here is what I believe these are. First or Top sword. French model 1822 saber, Officers. 4 Bar Heavy Cavalry Bancal Saber. Blade dated 1858. I cant tell where it was manufactured or what the other proofs mean. But I believe it to be original. Second or Bottom sword. Acid etched blade with "W.H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia" on 4 lines. I have no idea of the pattern. It seems to have attributes of a couple patterns. With the lack of any other markings and no Civil War markings in the etching, I believe it to be an older reproduction. However, I am a new collector. Thanks for looking. Scott 1st Sword 2nd Sword

Welcome aboard You may want to also post them to sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/board/60/renaissance-military-swordsThe big one should be Chatelleraut for the blade. If you can show, or transcribe the hallmarks/poincons, I can look at cheat sheets I have to confirm. If it was a private cutler doing the hilt, there will be a larger oval mark somewhere on the guard itself (crossed swords, what have you). Can you share a better photo of the Horstmann mark (upright, please)? The hilt may be a recycled German made French 1816/British 1822 affair but that seems like it has a very lightweight hilt. What we do see of the etching seems a bit flaky. From the limited photos of the blade etch, I'd not guess. A repro would certainly want to include US, eagle and banner. What I can see is a fairly generic etch which would fit for a pre ACW Horstmann affair. There is a fellow, Richard Schenk that knows the Horstmann marks well and often frequents these two spots. civilwartalk.com/forums/small-arms-edged-weapons.93/www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/forum/8-edged-weapons/Cheers GC

Thanks GC for the info and thanks to the Mod for the move. I'll brush up on a better way to post pics and take some new pictures. I will mess with the lighting and use a digital camera instead of my phone. The etching is hard to pick up. It's a very nice quality sword. If its a repro, its a very nice one. As far as the 1822 sword, I don't see an oval mark on the hilt. There is some very small marks on one of the bars so I'll get a picture of them. Thank you for the info and the links. Scott

Small marks on the bar of the large sword are likely more poincons and maybe a number. Here is a brief for Chatellerault.http://users.skynet.be/euro-swords/chatellerault.htm

Welcome to the forum.
The 1822’s are my favorite. Nice officer Bancal. Very cool.
I’m no help with other, I’m afraid, but it looks interesting.
