OP, it just dawned on me that with your restrictions on firearm and sword possession...think of all the money you are saving!!!

“Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue.” ----Sen. Barry Goldwater "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." ----Benjamin Franklin
I'm racking my brain to think of a "strong" female character that came out of the gate as a badass. Sarah Connor and Ripley pre-date Vasquez, but they were reluctant heroes that "became" because of their circumstances.
I think you're right, Vasquez was the first badass female character, while at the same time never having been mistaken for a man...

Agreed, Ripley was convincingly tough but wasn't trying to project herself as a badass.
I suppose there could be some old movie somewhere that would prove me wrong.

Zula from Conan the Destroyer, came out a few years before Aliens.
Oh yes, Zula! How could I forget? My memory is a bit fuzzy on 35 year old movies
Also, I think Cleopatra Jones from the Blaxploitation film of 1973.
To be certain there haven't been very many bad-ass female characters in film prior to around 2005 or so. Now there are so many it's become a worn out trope and an excuse for poor writing and character development (I'm looking at YOU Rey Palpatine!).

If Zulu was Grace Jones’ character then yes kinda. She was a bit of a caricature/comic book the way she was played. But that was Grace. And when she was introduced she had been captured and Conan had to set her free. Vasquez never need to be set free, she freed herself in the end. I think I agree with everyone else as I can’t think of anyone else.

Everyone in Conan the Destroyer was a comic book joke. But point taken. At the very least she was a depiction of a physically convincing female warrior.
Brienne of Tarth, Eowyn, Katniss, Wonder Woman, Buffy, Xena, Beatrix, Lagertha, Rey, Michonne, Trinity, Yukio, Alice, Mei -- none of them even close. Even Sarah Conner and Ellen Ripley herself are out bad-assed by Vasquez.
Oh, boy. I did it now. My wife just became aware of this thread and would like to weigh in. I’m turning it over to her now:
Good morning, comrades. So, let me preface that Vasquez is unquestionably a badass. That said, the reluctant badasses in Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor are more so. Their reluctance stems from their willingness to consider that they are out of their depth, and ruminate on the implications of that. Their total situational awareness (Lanaaaaa!) is less likely to be clouded by cockiness and swagger, which was unfortunately not the case with Vasquez. Granted, Vasquez’s downfall was due to bad orders from an incompetent CO, but there is a performance to her badassery that ultimately interferes with her ability to truly stay frosty. Connor and Ripley weren’t looking to impress anybody, they were looking to survive, as is the case with their literary descendants like Katniss Everdeen et al. My two cents.
I’m back. She’s pretty awesome. Just have to get her into swords...

Yes and that wasn’t a put down of her character. I loved Grace Jones whether she was playing a character or in real life. She was outrageous and larger than life.
And we have really derailed this thread. 😏

Rey? What is she doing on a list of female badasses? Is that some kind of attempt at humor?
I think the only female badass that would compare to Rodriguez is Azumi.
I just pulled a link of the "top female bad-asses" and listed them out. Trust me, I do NOT think Rey is a bad-ass. I mean, look at that list. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER?.... c'mon.
Imagine Vasquez vs Buffy in a Celebrity Death Match. It'd be like Mephistopheles vs Gandhi.

mrstabby: Mine gets pressed to the top as well, but that way the tip gets ground of, don't like that either. Unfortunately I'm an edge-perfectionist. Also one wrong move when unsheathing and the throat nicks the edge on either side.

AndiTheBarvarian: Perhaps I've got one from the batch for Matt Easton ?!?

AndiTheBarvarian: When I draw the saber it's automatically pressed with the spine to the scabbard so there's space for the edge to not touch the scabbard. When the false edge starts it's released but can be carefully draw completely without touching the scabbard.

AndiTheBarvarian: Too little gap for a needle, so also I see no way to get the glue in.
Mar 31, 2024 8:02:34 GMT
mrstabby: I was easily able to poke through the glue on all of my Windlass swords/daggers, then it just seems to wick in forever, it never was thick. I can't imagine how there isn't any dulling though, unless yours is less wide or the scabbard is bigger.

AndiTheBarvarian: There's not really an opening on mine, very good fit of guard and blade and some glue or epoxy in it. Since my scabbard doesn't dull the edge too I seem to be on the lucky side with Windlass this time.

mrstabby: Maybe it screams in pain now, but I like it..
Mar 30, 2024 20:35:26 GMT
mrstabby: PSA: Give your Windlass swords some superglue, they appreciate it. My 1796 drank 4g through the opening between guard and blade, now it rings much louder and vibrates much less.

mrstabby: What now, pulling a sword out of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? Intriguing!
Mar 29, 2024 12:49:08 GMT
AndiTheBarvarian: Dwayne Johnson disagrees!

rschuch: As anyone who's seen Excalibur knows, getting the sword INTO the rock isn't the problem, it's getting it back out again.
Mar 28, 2024 19:13:13 GMT
durinnmcfurren: Movie turned out better than it had any right to be considering how many times a blade was shoved into rock. Yes, even once would be too much, but it was way more than once.

Ramses1079: Yeah me too, which is a shame because he’s a good author. I guess that’s like when your favorite band releases a new album, and there’s always one or two tracks that you’re like “what were they thinking?”
