So I've got a Chassepot bayonet, and I'd really like to be able to clearly read the writing on the spine of the blade. (In the attached pic you can just barely make out bits of it.) There's obviously quite of a bit of pitting, and I'm looking for suggestions on how to bring out the writing. Want to be sure I don't damage it in the process though.

With all due respect I’d say your best bet is to find a magician w/magic wand.

It looks like the pitting is too deep to fully remove without also removing the etchings. However, if you gently rub some high grit (over 1200) sandpaper oiled with wd40 on it, some of the dirt & rust will be removed and what hasn’t been claimed by pitting will be easier to make out.
