is this a thing?
holding a sword with my dominant hand by the hilt and off hand by the pommel seems to be the way people do it.
but i find if i hold it like a hockey stick with my dominant hand at the pommel end, and my off hand lower down by the guard (as in right handed, shooting left), i have more control, and could make decent "wrist shot" hits.
is this a thing or is there any style that uses this?

I’d say do what suites you the best. The normal procedure for a right hander is grasp the butt end (the nomenclature will change depending on sword) with the left hand. This is where the power comes in. The right hand behind the guard and is used to guide the sword. The exact details will vary a bit.

I'm not aware of an official sword fighting style but I sometimes grip a longsword this way too automatically. I have a dominant right hand but also I often use my left hand where others use their right dominant hand. At least with poleweapons you change the upper hand sometimes afaik.

If it works, go ahead. You could try cutting using that grip. is this a thing or is there any style that uses this? A conventional dominant-forward grip is pretty universal for two-handed sword. The exception being lefties being taught by schools that insist on the Right-Handed Way. Polearms benefit from being able to use either left-forward or right-forward grips. Some styles use left-forward as their default grip. (I learned polearm mostly fighting against sword-and-shield, so I like right-forward. I'm not ambidextrous enough with polearms to be comfortable with it, but will switch grips when facing lefty shield, i.e., shield in right hand.)

Whatever you can do with one hand you should be able to do with the other.
