The scenario: For some bizarre reason you have to fight in a gladiator arena. No armor except a gambeson, no guns, spears, polearms or ranged weapons (but you can throw your melee weapon)! The parallel universe modern Romans want a fair fight, so your opponent has fighting skills similar to yours. You can choose between several weapon combos. As a SBG forum member you have the first choice, your opponent the second. Choose wisely...
(Darn, Knife of course)
Smallsword and mace, just for fun!

D-Guard is ok (indeed I had my Windlass D-Guard in my mind) , just not ridiculous out of size versions (except Wes Beem's monster bowies) A big sail guard main gauche for a parrying dagger also.

Oof, I would love so much to go with the Bowie knife and Tomahawk on principal but it does make me rather uncomfortable to go against some of the other weapons on that list with that combo. Andi, when it comes to us picking these combos and such, can these be Bowie knives and tomahawks of our chosen styling and design or are these sort of the stereotypical type? Like for example could the bowie knife be of a more complex design with a very large hilt for example? Like say, a d-guard, etc. I love this combo because of portability & utility...but HAD to go with the knightly sword and shield (viking & shield would be second, gladius/tower shield), really anything with a large shield with the thinking it just being a huge defensive advantage. Without shields it is easily Rapier & dagger.

No rapier and Rotella? (went with knightly sword and shield) The shields are just too dominating. Rapier and anything in that offhand takes the rest.

Of course, the area denial and offensive abilities of the shield are definitely OP but...Gladiator games, Style over Substance, friends ! (Yep, not surviving for long)

I'm going for the classic gladius and scutum. If there's a chance I'll get killed, then I'll want to go out with my ancestors cheering me on.

It has it all So naturally I must take credit and steal your efforts. As Thomas Edison once famously said, you do not understand our American humour

Just don't pick a fight with the person carving the rump roast.

How are we defining "knightly" swords and shields? Are these any swords/shields knights ever used?
