Bought an albion tiberius off Eric a couple of weeks ago.
wanted to share simple tricks/tips on repairing wood that anyone can do
gouges: a bit more challenging (tears the wood grain)
dents: very easy to fix w/ just water + steam/light sanding
stained wood presents more of a challenge.
Eric's stolen before pictures:
(1) Tape off the area - painter's tape
(2) Moisten area with Q-tip. Steam with hand steamer or cover with cloth + iron. check often every 2-3 seconds.
after 3 cycles:
(3) Allow to dry. Sand, can start at 320 grit as a small area.
(4) tape off and blend out lightly with the sandpaper (remember to follow the wood grain!). use pain thinner or acetone if there is a finish to remove first. might as well steam and sand out other small nicks and dings
(5) Stain - found out off the albion site this is walnut. tested on pine paint mixing sticks: matches a dark walnut stain. Stain by brush, concentrate on the sanded spots twice then lightly coat all the wood, wipe off after just a couple of minutes. You can also paint thinner mix the stain to allow better penetration.
In the last picture if you squint...you can see a lighter shades (all spots lightly sanded - steamed/stained). this is not an "under" stain
Allow 2-3 weeks to dry...the surrounding wood is slowly getting lighter as it dries. (stain trying to dry under a finish) Above pictures are 6 days after stain.
Albion likely uses a finishing oil (very matte finish) so the light spots are "unfinished" and will darken up when I finally apply 2 coats of tung oil (usually 1-2 weeks between coats). It is very dry out where I live - you may have to wait a lot longer on drying in moist climates, winter weather
Hope this helps other DIYers!
