As I was deeply impressed by custom Kill Bill katana build, I decided to make one on my own. Well, rather, an easy version. I don't have enough resource to fully make one from the scratch:
1. I cannot build tsuka core. 2. I cannot build saya (and engraving on it)
3. I cannot build blade (and engraving on it)
What I'm planning is:
Buy a cheap replica, take it apart, replace/add some parts as much as I can: replace ito, replace fuchi/kashira, add on kojiri.
I ordered Masahiro replica yesterday, but I got an email from them, saying it's actually out of stock. (Huh, it still says In Stock at the time of this writing) So now I'm back to searching for a good replica to start from. I searched pretty much everywhere, and these are what I found:
I understand the first one obviously has higher quality as well as good reputation. But for my purpose (display only), I'm not sure if it's worth to pay that much extra. I'm never going to cut anything more than paper with this precious blade. So I'm more inclined to the second one. Do you think it's a good one to start with? Or should I just wait for some months until Masahiro ones are back in stock? Or can someone recommend me a better choice? Again, I don't really care much about the quality of the steel as long as it looks good and the foo-dog is actually engraved with some depth, not laser etched, and I don't care about tsuka fittings as they're to be all replaced anyway.

Perhaps you can find a jeweller that can engrave foo-dog on the blade. Most jewellers today have lost the skill using engraving tools to cut it into the metal and use a rotary type tool. Maybe you can luck out.

You can also electroetch the engraving with a vinyl stencil, salt water, qtips, and a battery. If you are interested, I can point you to a tutorial.

You need to travel to Okinawa and ask hatori Honzo to "give you one". It will help if you are hot blonde assassin / batto master!
