That locket+chape set looks insane!! Reminds me of Pisces. It goes well with Arwen's escape scene with the power over water.
I ain't an astrology guy, but just wording it that way makes me want such a scabbard, as I'm a pisces haha. Would be a nice subtle nod to it, not to mention the scabbard posted here looks amazing. As does the sword. The inlay work is impressive

Neither do I dig astrological stuff. But I love the Greek mythology aspect of it. Aphrodite turning into a fish escaping from a pursuer seems to fit the LotR’s Arwen chase scene.

I like the shape of that pommel! What inspired the design of this sword?
A polish or czech original; but the pommel was ultra big and the blade just was a 70 cm shaped plate of 5 mm thick spring steel - with a one-sided grind and no taper. also the guard was very thick. We had it some time ago... the whole thing was around 2,5 kg and called "Elf Sword"... Holger asked the guys if they could make it more refined with a little taper and a two-sided grind, but they said not possible. So the idea for this came up when we read all the good feedback for Purna and saw the results!

This is looking really great ! Please do keep us appraised on the handling.
For the scabbard, did you go for something special ?
No, Holger just wanted basic khukuri style; Purna offered to add the same loops as with the Hadhafang interpretaion and a simple brass tip.

(will really try taking and posting better pictures when the opportunity arises and I get better at taking pictures because I suck so bad at it... after I'm finished with accounting )
Purna shipped the sword last monday and it actually arrived last friday.
So, the (only ) bad thing first :
The sword was closely plastic wrapped, so closely in fact that it literally stuck to the paint/lacquer of the scabbard. When I removed it, I actually removed a part of the paint/lacquer too. "Don't be so hasty" indeed. (The leather is intact and actually very beautiful under it, don't know why he didn't keep it that way. Protection purpose ? )
For the "neutral" things, what to say...it is different from what I expected. Not in a bad or good way, just different.
It weighs 1226 g (2,702 lbs), made for a two-handed use in mind (but Purna used it totally one-handed ).
I don't know why I expected a very agile and nimble light sword with which one could "sword-dance".
The sword is actually massive. With its 5 centimeters-wide blade and "not-what-I-am-used-to" balance/handling caused by the curved handle shape, this sword is totally screaming "Let me go at it ! I will totally cut THROUGH it !". Even one-handed, it feels good but more strength would be needed to truly feel comfortable (I'm weak )
One-handed, I think it would totally shine on horseback though. The balance is really made to "slash".
Distal taper is...don't know how to qualify because of the ricasso part. The edge part spine is 6mm at its base to 3mm near the tip (the tip itself being 2mm or less something). The ricasso part is like a reverse (Blunt) edge. Not sure how to measure it or how it affects the handling.
There is a hollow grind in the middle of the blade which must be lightening the whole weight.
The bevel is very "Purna like" lol. Don't how to qualify it otherwise (the sharpness is off the roof yet the edge part is kind of beefy yet extremely polished).
The exceptionally good things : The brass works and carvings are just so wonderful. Never a handle has felt so good in hand.
Conclusion : I won't sword-dance with it but can totally clear a wood trail with it without getting tired and my wife may kill me if I try do such thing.

I'm so happy you are pleased with it. The dimensions are similar to the original prop. According to Peter Lyon the original sword was about 4.5mm at the base and tapered to 2mm at the tip. He thought the bevels were VERY annoying to grind. So Purna did a great job with that. Also, the brass inlay is worth the price altogether. It looks very well done to my eyes. The original prop weighed somewhere around 2.5 pounds, so it seems about right. The extra weight is likely the added thickness. I hope your misses enjoys this. It's a fabulous gift.

The distal taper is quite substantial. How does it balance? 5cm is quite a broad blade. I'm sure your wife can handle it, if Arwen can. Look at that arm! Though do be careful with those barbs on the blade, Liv Tyler accidentally stabbed herself with one of those when filming.

As I didn't give any measurements to Purna beyond what could be found on United Cutlery site and some video I found on YouTube, I was wondering if you had a hand in that ? Anyway, thank you so much !
Kane Shen The sword balance is definitely not...hmmm...katana-like ? I actually was very surprised by the way it handled. And the main culprit seems to be the curved handle rather than the weight (which is definitely manageable two-handed).
Of course, the sword tends to go "forward" naturally but the handle somehow "accentuates" that motion...something like an acceleration toward the end of the movement. The only way I can describe it is : "it wants to cut".
Due to the shape, it does feel awkward edge up though.
For thrusting, it would be like...bayonetting ? (the ricasso is really great for some kind of "half-swording") I really don't see it one-handed.
Purna blunted the barbs (actually, there's only the one near the edge, the other one was mostly grinded out). I do not worry about the strength of my wife, I worry what she can do to me with it. (her grip strength is phenomenal)

Those are very interesting characteristics. The way you describe it almost reminds me of the 1796 Brit Light Cavalry sabre. I should say the geometry of that grip and the overall silhouette remind me of some of the Chinese willow-leaf sabers, which are quite feminine in form but pack some quite savage slashes.
mrstabby: Hello, welcome even under these sad circumstances. Maybe put out a thread in the Renaissance/Military subsection.

mrstabby: Been thinking the same - but the person that set up the page might not be there anymore and old code gets messy when not maintained. Might be a "repair subscriptions, destroy function X, repair X, destroy Y" situation by now - would mean a total overhaul.
