Aka the "more or less shameless custom ripoff of Hadhafang/Sword of Arwen/Elrond from the Lord of the Rings Movies" As an unabashed fan of the work of Purna Darnal from Great Gurkha Khukuris, I trusted him another project based on this sword : (I know, so unimaginative from my part) As someone who has (and whose wife has too) reoccuring dreams about what could be identified as a "figure of Salvation" despite not being religious (at most, I may be a "As Luck would have it" people), some internet searches came out with some troubling results. Long story, as the sword nerd I am, I decided to honour these dreams : the first sword by Purna was in honor of the Goddess Durga, this one would be in honor of the Bodhisattva/Buddha Tara (didn't know female buddhas were a thing before my wife dreamt of the green one...). So, this sword is for my wife. As I didn't know if Purna's would know what Lord of the Rings or Elves are (he doesn't), I asked him to put mantras in sanskrit with which he would be more familiar. But better let the photos do the talking : Something I really wanted were brass carvings in the handle : (Cutting brass parts and glueing process) The scabbard would be wood covered with ganjawal leather. Purna has been very thankful for the opportunity to work on unique projects which allowed him to progress in his skills (satin finish, looking at you Brother Nathaniel ) He is preparing something great for the scabbard too.

I tried to DIY my way into getting a functional replica of Arwen's sword. I got something entirely different instead. Here's my thread on it: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/56777/hadhafang-sword-project-nearly-finishedWhat an exceptional job Purna has done recreating this sword. My thread details an email exchange I had with the sword's maker, Peter Lyon. He wanted to carve channels on the handle, which was cocobolo wood, and lay brass into it, but he balked at the idea having done so with Sting. If you know anything about manufacturing hero versions of swords for films, then you know you have to make more than one. He did this SIX times for Sting, so when he was faced with doing it six more times for Arwen's sword, he said NO WAY, and he was right to do so. It had very little screen time anyway. So the fact that Purna did the carvings and inlay work is incredible. I love how you personalized it for your spouse. It would be amazing to be presented with a custom made version of a famous sword like Hadhafang. Your wife is going to be delighted.

Imo this sword sets a precedent going forward with the greatness of Purna's work. I almost wish I would have gotten my stuff done afterward when he had more experience and practice as I think they would have been even better. Just absolutely incredible, it's a crime that this isn't getting more play here. I would be expecting people to go bananas. Hey man, you started all of this. So far as I am concerned, if you ask him for work down the road and he says he's busy, he should drop what he's doing and make time for you. You're kinda his paisano now.

Wow~~~~ I admire the man's efficiency. Not a few days passed since the completion of the two swords I commissioned, he has already finished several projects for you guys.
The complexity of this thing! Those are a lot of carving and etching to be done! I really love that hollow ground geometry of the blade. And with a scabbard no less. I am consistently being amazed!

Part of me believes if I told Peter Lyon that someone commissioned a smith in Nepal, one who has no prior experience making European or Fantasy swords, to recreate one of his famous swords with custom runes as a gift to his wife, I think he'd actually be delighted. I won't tell Mr. Lyon, of course, but it's a pleasant thought.

Very nice. Hard to find functional LOTR swords that don't shy away from the engraving and mimic the proportions well.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments, it means a lot to me Purna actually mentioned being very tired lately. For the carvings, he first wanted to try by "computer" (someone must have offered their services) but after a week of nothing done, he got the blade back, saying he "shouldn't have blindly believed them" and, to quote him : "...we have to draw from our hand and then start making it sir. I don’t believe on computer sir. My drawing is better than believing on computer sir." He did mention wanting to take some vacation after this project. Fresh air does feel good.

(I am absolutely not manual oriented, I wouldn't even know where to begin...) Oh, the wealth of informations...and tips from Peter Lyon no less !

As I am on "vacation" for two weeks, I let Purna do some cutting (15 bottles) : (No damage whatsoever ) He told me he made it rather as a two-hander but he is totally using it one-handed. Will post more when it comes.

In case we forgot, he still has a site specialised in khukuris (and other nepalese blades). But yes, it is a lot easier to get hold of him with Facebook/Messenger.
