A few months ago I decided I would like to add a gladius to my collection, and quickly settled on a mainz gladius with a bone grip as my preferred style. Unfortunately, when surveying the available production gladii I could not find anything suitable. Deepeka has models that look right, but a reputation for spotty quality, others feature ricassos, fullers, and rather unconvincing attempts at imitating bone. Fortunately I came across a thread here by Eric Bergeron about commissioning a custom gladius from a Nepalese smith, and since that turned out well I decided to contact Purna with my idea. This is my concept mockup, based on a blade found at Mainz, now in the British Museum (the Sword of Tiberius) and a hilt from Vindonissa Museum. Here is Purna's sketch of the design.

I saw this finished sword on his Facebook page and was wondering who commissioned it. It's fantastic!

I was just talking to Purna about the gladius he posted on his Facebook page this morning, looks amazing for the drawing, have you received the gladius yet?

The guard may not be perfect, but it's a pretty damn good attempt for his first time. It looks gorgeous overall.

That is a beautiful gladius. Purna is an amazing smith. I wonder if he could hook me up with a Dacian Falx?

Here are pictures of the completed sword. I did not really appreciate the size of it until I had it in-hand - it may be short, but it is not small! The blade is easily wider than all my viking-age swords, only my Albion Sovereign can beat it's width at the hilt. Purna really nailed the specified blade dimensions, although the guard is a bit off, if I had seen it before the sword was assembled I would have asked him to change it, but I will live with it as-is. Overall weight is 1140g. How could I miss this thread ? Absolutely awesome ! Did you ask for a scabbard ? He can really do something good.

Thanks; no scabbard for me, I do not have much use for them, and prefer to admire the bare blades.

He made a Khuda for one of his friends who makes impressive cutting videos. His bigger khukuris can go through more than twenty bottles at once. Yes, he has some difficulties with two-edged swords but he has been rummaging through his forefathers' works to get some examples, so he is definitely progressing. But if you want something single-edged (even throwable folding multiple single-edges ), Purna can do it. ... Disclaimer : I haven't been remunerated in any way by Purna Darnal or GGK or any one that have any monetary interest or value in their endeavors or something . But as Sir Thorfinn said in Eric Bergeron's Viking Sword (single-edged ^^) thread : I think you may be personally putting Purna's kids thru college Think of the children, always think of the children. (or yeah, we like seeing new projects and a dacian falx after seeing gladii, spatha, kopis and falcata... )

Someone needs to do a xiphos. They are complicated builds, but I think he can do it. It would be my next project with him if I were not already building one myself.
