Are there any high quality alternatives to Albion that don't have as long of a wait time? I'm looking for an XVa longsword, or something similar in the $1000 range.

Waiting times of eight to twelve months or even more is absolutely normal for most custom sword makers atm...
You may want to keep a close eye on Kult Of Athena, every now and then an Albion pops up.

What about the process requires this span of time exactly? Is there just a big backlog? I looked around at a lot of smiths and companies and you are right, the waiting time is rather consistent. Arms & Armor had the fastest time of 4 months, but I wish they had more pommel and hilt variety like Albion. To answer the second part of your post I have checked Kult of Athena. They do in-fact have an Albion in stock for $3,900 .

Welcome aboard A&A is quicker to fulfill orders on stock items. They also offer customization and full customs. www.arms-n-armor.com/products/black-prince-swordCheers GC an edit to add that yes, the wait is mostly the demand. When I ordered a special order black Prince in an Xmas season back in 2001, Craig had it to me in three weeks. That was then, and at half of today's pricing.

It is a small and very segmented market that is heavily dependent on economic conditions. One can even argue that Albion is semi-custom.

They pop up in the classifieds from time to time.
I feel bad for the european sword collectors, you guys go through crazy wait times. It seems very intimidating to go into a buy knowing you won't see the thing for a year... It felt like an eternity waiting for my motoharas and yet it only took 2.5 months. It's disgusting that evolution get their pieces out in such a short amount of time, don't know how they're doing it.
