Sorry, some words gone missing in the hurry! What I meant to ask was if somebody can figure out what the signature means! Regards, Anders

I know next to nothing about authenticating these types of blades, and certainly can't help translate the mei. I just want to say that I really like that tsuba. Also, the samegawa looks quite nice to my untrained eye, which implies that it might have been quite a deal for $20.

Hi, Alien! I agree that the tsuba is nice, with the boat on a river and small gold fillings. The handle, or samegawa, I wrapped myself, but I believe it is ray skin on it.

It is signed Kanemoto 兼元 , but which one I do not know. There are about forty of them.

Thank you, Alien, for your kind reply! I also find this tsuba nice, with the little boat on the river and the small gold fillings. The handle however, I wrapped myself, but I believe there is ray skin on it.

Thank you, phoule! At least I have a name on it, I don't mind that there are many of them smiths with the same name. I have allways had a feeling that this was more than a cheap chinese copy of a japanese sword.

Looks like a genuine Japanese wakizashi to me. Can't really tell what condition it's in, though. Some pics of the blade outside in the sunlight would go a long way over indoor photos darkened by flash. Getting good photos is tricky; best to do it in bright, ambient light and reduce glare as much as possible.

I really like the tsuba...its an old carved iron tsuba with what looks like gold highlights. VERY old school classy and probably worth several hundred dollars or more.

I had the feeling it is quite old, so it was good news. I found the tsuba that came with the sword, it is also in iron, but not at all in the same caliber as the other one. Very simple with no etchings or carvings. See pics!
