It's been awhile for me for customizing swords but when this piece came up for sale recently in the classifieds I grabbed it...always liking this model. Original grip is black leather over carved wood. The carving in the wood that Del Tin does is sort of odd, but I suppose the idea is to have a spiral look to it and instead of spiraling leather and then covering it with a leather grip...they cut the wood with a dremel like tool. Anyway. I darkened the fittings a bit and redid the grip, removing the spiral groove business and replacing with a simple, double riser in the middle and covered with leather...dark red. Think it turned out nice. I have a thing for darkened fittings and red/reddish grips. The sword handles really quite well. One of those "better handling" Del Tins for sure. Feels very similar to my Albion Templar in handling, the Albion is overall better in terms of mass distribution etc but I was surprised at how well this DT stands up in comparison to that specific Albion model (the Templar is one of the more stout/blade forward designs Albion makes). A very classic cruciform sword which is something I seem to gravitate too all the time. 20201222_075941 by warspite15, on Flickr 20201212_143213 by warspite15, on Flickr 20201212_143203 by warspite15, on Flickr

Wow...what an improvement. How did it change the handling if at all? THe Del Tin 2121 was one of my first "real" repro swords. What I didn't like about it was the oversize and shape of the grip.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the handling changed in any significant way. However I do find a more comfortable slightly thinner grip than what was on there does make the sword feel better in hand if that makes sense.

Being fortunate enough to have acquired two swords modified by Bryan Heff (including the grip) some time ago, and thus having been able to inspect his work up close and in usage, now I once more must say I’m impressed by his fantastic work. Looks great and great choice with the colour as well. That Del Tin is a beauty and is more so now that it has that new grip and darkened fittings.
